Tan Hill Inn, Keld

Highest pub in the whole of Britain (not just England), standing alone in the middle of bleak featureless moorland. A welcome sight after walking 4 miles along the Pennine Way in the rain. Amazing place with a friendly atmosphere, nice roaring fire, good selection of ales from Black Sheep and Theakstons, and excellent food. I'm looking forward to returning here next month when I'm walking the Coast to Coast - it's 4 miles off route but well worth the detour.

The Old Arcade, Cardiff

Decent enough pub by city centre standards. Good range of Brains beers (including the ever rarer cask version of Dark) and friendly atmosphere, one of the last traditional pubs left in the area.

The Star Inn, Talybont on Usk

One of my all-time favourite pubs, always a good selection of real ales and a nice beer garden if it's not raining! Ideal place to end up after a walk in the nearby hills.

The Borough Arms, Cardiff

This used to be a great pub, but has sadly gone downhill in recent years. Last time I was there it was rammed full of chavs, and there was an incredibly obnoxious bouncer on the door. I won't be back in a hurry.

The Traders Tavern, Cardiff

Traditional pub tucked away in a side street where the Chavs won't find it. Close to Cineworld so ideal for a post-film pint of Old Speckled Hen, and good food too. Has always been fairly quiet when I've been in here, so given previous reviewer's experience probably best avoided when there's a gig in the CIA.

The Glass Works, Cardiff

Sadly this former real ale mecca is no more, having been turned into a trendy bar called called Copa. They do have a good selection of interesting continental beers, but at over 2 for a half (they don't serve pints) it's hardly worth it.

The Goat Major, Cardiff

Excellent traditional pub right in the city centre, one of the few places still serving Brains Dark (the real stuff, not the Smooth keg version). Also does good food at reasonable prices, and the bar staff are always friendly. An oasis in a desert of trendy bars!
