The Jubilee Oak, Crawley

The manager doesn't make any comments on here - it wouldn't be wise or professional!

PBI sounds like someone i have barred and is therefore a trifle bitter!

PBI's posting is so different to the other recent posts - so, if i haven't bareed them - perhaps they were mistaken over the pubs name and location.

Strangley, we have increased the 'at-any-one-time' head count in the pub by a hundred over the past year. Obviously these extra people don't share PBI's views.

The Swan Hotel, Haslemere

This is a fantastic pub; it has Olde World charm and good staff. Just mind your head as you walk around if you are over 5' 8" tall!

The customers however are strange - almost weird. Fights are not uncommon on the beautiful green outside. Why does such a beautiful village has such a large residency of nutters? Perhaps some interbreeding occurred with some farm animals and their keepers.

Visits from Hells Angels are not uncommon. Likewise visits from the police are also uncommon.

Not a place to visit on weekend evenings.

The Bright Helm, Brighton

I couldn't find this pub on this sites listings and had to trawl through every JDW listing!

No longer just a Wetherspoons - this pub has been named after its revamp of the other year.

Now named The Brighthelm or something similar.... Strangely all the other venues with Brighthelm in their title tend to be religous venues or services!!!!!!!!

The Standard, Brighton

It says a lot when this pub was closed by the Police for a week-end under their new licencing powers!

I even saw a bouncer turn the landlord and his staff away from a club one night.

The Standard serves a pupose - it keeps the scum away from the rest of Brighton and the management and staff have to be congratulated on this amazing feat. Thank You. x

The Aquarium, Brighton

I have declined previously from making any comment about this pub - as it was PREVIOUSLY Brightons worst. But all bad things come to an end and this pub NOW has a chance to excel.

Originally an 'Irish Straight Pub'. This venue was upgraded into an extremely popular GAY pub by a jovial guy by the name of MAGGIE in the late 1980's.

The pub is small but Maggie still managed to erect a 'walk-way' stage to host Drag comedy shows with even Lily Savage in her pre-fame days.....

During the early 1990's the staff and some loyal customers even put on annual pantomimes which were terrible but highly amusing!

The 'hip' Gay crowd then diluted and moved away to many other GAY venues that were springing up around both Brighton and Hove. The Aquarium then became the haunt of 'BEARS' (larger & usually hairy guys).

Gone was the humour and giggles - to be replaced by the icy stares of hardened Bears attempting to be very butch and practicing not to lisp.

The dark varnished wood walls became unattractive and it was rumoured that any 'decoration' or 'up-grade' involved just the flick of a duster over only a few areas.

Dark and dingy - this pub then changed it's loyal customer base to those that were constantly on the borrow or pinch.... YES, this was the place to be once you had cashed your Benefit Cheque. The hangout of the lazy, work shy. Popular yes, but not with the mainstream GAYs.

Recently this pub was closed for a long period where builders had to saw through layers of grime.

We now have a bright and clean pub which deserves a return of the mainstream guys. No more dark varnished wood walls.

The owners and staff have done well here as I'm sure that the old surroundings had depressed them all and taken all hope of living away from them.

I wish this new presentation the best of luck - but don't spoil it by allowing the scroungers back - as that will keep us all away again.

This pub has never been popular with females - not even butch ones. So if you are seeking a female free environment then this is the current top choice.

Interesting to see how the comments gradually improve over the years.

Mid 2006 saw a New Manager in place; it also saw the Bouncers changing from 'local licencing' to SIA registered lecenced Door Supervisors and a change of door staff. Finally, the new licencing extended drinking hours law was implimented - these have all had a positive aspect added to the very popular Jubilee Oak.

Whereas most large towns have a Tuesday 'Student Night'; Crawley (with Gatwick Airport as a neighbour) has a Tuesday 'Aircrew night' (AKA Trolley Dollies, Air Waitressess or Cart Tarts). The Jubilee Oak is one of the few popular meeting venues on these nights.

Thursdays are very busy and equate with other pubs Friday and Saturday trade. Currently billed as a a 'curry night' with a variety of Curries around 5 with all trimmings AND A DRINK!

Friday and Saturdays do get extremely busy at the Jubilee Oak. The whole customer profile changes around 7pm. The hardened drinkers of an older age group are quickly replaced by a smart crowd of 18 - 30 year olds who are well behaved; out for a cheap meal and cheap drinks before hitting the high profile Liquid Envy nightclub (2,000 capacity with 2 dance floors, 2 D.J's, 4 bars, plentiful toilets with attendants with grooming aids in both ladies and gents and 2 cloakrooms). Most Friday and Saturday customers are therefore well dressed and NOT drunk; ready for the night club scene later.

The Manager has taken on board comments about the long wait for service and has made big changes with the staff rota: EXTRA STAFF are now reallocated to cover the busy periodS: Long waits at the bar are a thing of the past.

Any complaints about the Pub being too hot or too cold are easiley rectified - you just have to ask the Manager or Door Staff. They can't do anything if they are not informed.

Attitude works both ways and polite customers are always treated with respect - unpolite customers are not welcome - so keep away if you have attitude!

No steps at the entrances means easil access for those with mobility problems. A Ground floor toilet with aids is positioned in the centre of this very large bar.

Forget the past history - The Jubille Oak is the place to be!
