The Halfway House, Edinburgh

Great wee bar, I always drink here when I'm in Edinburgh, I found it when I was at Uni there. Good beer, no tourists as it's off the beaten track. Food is good too.

Santa Fe, Reading

this place is crap. full of posers willing to pay silly money for bottled mexican beers which are always too warm. Pseudo classy cocktal list hoovers any remaining money out of your pockets before you head for an overpriced and unimaginative faux SW American meal where the food will be badly prepared, over cooked and poorly presented by an overattentive underworking tip hungry fool.

As you stumble out into the night much poorer only slighly less hungry and quite nauseous from the McCocktails consider this:

Please, eat somewhere else, the LSB is just nearby and is loads better, as for drinking, we need to do better in Reading if this is considered a good place for beers or cocktails.

The Rose and Thistle, Reading

The RISC Global Cafe and Bar, Reading

RISC bar! scary best bottled beer line up in town, full of hippies mind but they clear out leaving you the a good run to the bar. Dunno where they get the bar staff from, always quiet attractive young women but very very slow. They do some weird poetry nights and raise money for lesbian dockworks in nigeria type things but if you tune that rubbish out and just enjoy the beers and the slightly "Beatnik" atmos it's well good. The foods gone all veggie again, which is a shame as they used to go great jerk chicken.

The Bugle, Reading

Strange shed-like public house. closes at odd times. If it wasn't for the plasma screen in the back bar and the modern drinks it would feel like a bar from about a hundred years ago. Some of the regulars look a hundred or so as well. Becoming a bit more populars wiht the under 70s since you can get a seat and hear yourself think in here which is unique along Friar street on a Friday night. I think it's owned by the same lot who own the Blagrave. If you find it open try it out.

The Battle Inn, Reading

I took this place on as part of a Reading boys drinking day, you know the "lets drink in the worst pubs in town type affair", I was pretty far gone by the time we got here so some of my recollections may be filtered via drink. However you look at it though, this isn't a good pub, it's not rough, i doubt the regulars there are in any condition to start a fight, unless its with themselves, the beer was rank i do know that, I've not been back but I go past it on the bus most days and it doesn't look better in daylight.

The Allied Arms, Reading

Allied allied allied, great pub. Been drinking here for years, excellent laugh and got Camras seal of apparoval last year. Beer garden for the summer months should be great once they finished the building work on St Mary Butts church.

The Blagrave Arms, Reading

Good to see a top Reading pub getting good ratings. This is the best saturday afternoon pub in town, not too busy, good beers, sky sports news on in the background. It's great on a Friday night with a good crowd and lots of promotions. Too quiet during the week though.

Total change in scene from the drinking barns along Friar street and in my opinion, far far better.
