Kay's Bar, Edinburgh

A cosy little bakc street boozer oozing convivial atmosphere Our first pub of the crawl, so kicked off with an excellent pint of Schiehallion.

The Guildford Arms, Edinburgh

Right next door to Cafe Royal, it has an impressive interior and even more impressive selection. I counted 10 real ale hand pumps plus another 12 pumps with continental lagers and fruit belgian beers. It can get really busy, so more suitable for an afternoon visit. The Punk IPA (dangerous at 6%) was top class.

Cafe Royal, Edinburgh

More like a classy bar than a real ale boozer, but still having enough offer to real ale enthusiast. They have a decent selection of ales including Sciehallion, Kelham Island and Deuchars IPA beers. The interior is quite stunning, large windows, mosaic decration, leather banquets, chrome & brass etc. It can get really busy, but if you can secure a seat (at the bar is the best position, you are in for a really nice treat.

The Bow Bar, Edinburgh

Lovely old fashioned pub with large victorian windows in pretty street. Great selection of ales and whiskies, friendly staff and ambient atmosphere (contemplating a quiet pint while reading paper on Saturday afternoon). On my visit I particulalrly enjoyed Brysons Westmorelandand Glencoe Wild Oat Stout.

The Halfway House, Edinburgh

Not easy to find, so the cliche "hidden gem" springs to mind. Great location, the cosy bar serves not extensive (3-4), but well balanced selection of ales. I really enjoyed Kelburn Goldihops and Northumberland's Bucking Fastard. The plcae i not huge, but they manage to serve meals from their pocket sized kitchen - I ad my first ever haggis with neeps and tatties here and it was very sucessful introduction.

Cloisters Bar, Edinburgh

Another great selection of real ales (9+). The food was very agreeable, too, had fish and chips and a cheeseburger, both fresh, tasty and large portion. Quirky building and cosy interior, the Balck Isle and Cairgorn ales were very tasty indeed.

The Blue Blazer, Edinburgh

Lovely real ale pub with 10+ beers on pumps plus great selection of rums and whiskies (if that's what you're into). Cosy interior with open fires and interesting floor mosaic decorations. Best bet is Cairgorn Trade Winds, Orkney Dark Island and Red Cuillin were also extremely drinkable.

The Nag's Head, Shrewsbury

The best feature of this pub is the building. The ales are unispiring range from national breweries (Hobgoblins, Directors etc), the crowd is young, trendy and loud. Piped music. Walked in and straight out. No thanks.

Salopian Bar, Shrewsbury

Great beer list including ciders and perries. Had the Stonehaouse Station Bitter (meh), Oakham's Bishops Farewell (lovely) and Westons Country Perry (super smashing great). Not so keen on the sports bar interior, too modern and cool for my taste.

The Three Fishes, Shrewsbury

Great selection of ales, ciders and perries, plus cracking pork pies - what more can you wish for. Had Thornbridge Kipling, O'Hanlons Port Stout and Country perry (not necesary in this order), all well kept. Lively atmosphere - perhaps a bit too busy for my liking and great historic timber framed building.

The Coach and Horses, Shrewsbury

A pleasant boozer with cosy interior, right next door to Admiral Benbow. Pint of Shropshire Gold was extremely drinkable.

The Admiral Benbow, Shrewsbury

Probably the best pub in Shrewsbury. Friendly service, great selection of regional beers and ciders, convivial atmosphere and as a bonus: they don't let in the under30s! The Gwatkins perry was top class and you cannot go wrong with any of the ales from Salopian brewery.

The Old Crown, Hesket Newmarket

The best pub in Lakes. The roaring fire is a welcome respite to soaked walkers and makes the small bar particularly cosy. They have their own brewery on site and 5-6 Hesket Newmarket ales with Lake District themed names are always on tap - you are really spoiled for choice. Try the Grat Cockup (3% ABV), the best mild you will ever find.

The Royal Hill, Edgerley

Not sure how this pub rates in winter, but we visited on hot sunny day, sat outside looking at the river and enjoyed a cracking pint of Shropshire Gold. It was the perfect beer and the perfect location at the time.

The White Horse, Hedgerley

What a gem! On top of fantastic range of beers they also have a deli counter inside the pub - fantastic pie, cheese, pates and other goodies. We visited during the beer festival - the range on offer was very extensive. And you can watch red kites straight from the beer garden + excellent walks nearby.

The Old Poet's Corner, Ashover

Extensive and balanced selection of mainly regional ales (9+) plus ciders & perries. Thornbridge Jaipur is a must. Convivial atmosphere, cosy and quirky rooms, roaring fires. Great food too, but avoid the apple crumble, which was rather horrid. Went on Halloween weekend and it felt like the best pub in the world. The plentiful Jack o lanterns decorations were of highly imaginative designs and carving skills.
