The Pilot Inn, North Greenwich

A pleasant pub with tasty ESB. Bizarrely, the management has removed the drip trays, presumably to encourage the bar staff to serve short measure. So insist on a top-up even if its only a matter of a quarter of an inch! (The charming bar staff are happy to oblige.)

Conan Doyle, Edinburgh

We visited Edinburgh this week and, for a tourist wanting a good pint and decent food, this pub hits the spot! I had the impression on each of our three visits that all the customers were enjoying themselves. The real ale was well kept, and wine bought by the bottle was fantastically good value. The service was cheerful, and the tasty no-nonsense food was rapidly served. As a result, there was quite a rapid turnover of diners so, if there's no table free when you arrive, you may not have to wait long for one.

The Barony Bar, Edinburgh

Another reviewer has mentioned the smell in this pub. My wife and I visited it the other evening (having read its entry in the Good Beer Guide). After we walked through the door, we paused short of the bar and I said, "It stinks of wee." My wife said she was thinking exactly the same thing, so we turned tail and went elsewhere. There is no excuse for this lack of basic hygeine and housekeeping, and it is a shame that a pub that in other repects would appear to be excellent should let itself down in this way.

Cafe Royal, Edinburgh

I visited on a quiet Monday early evening. The beer was good and I found the service friendly. They have just restarted using dimple mug style glasses (if you want one) which makes a nice change. The decor and bar layout lived up to expectations. However, the gents toilets were disgustingly smelly. You could smell a strong odour of dried urine in the corridor as you approached them and inside it was eye-watering. I found I couldn't enjoy my beer from then on because of the stench still lingering in my nostrils. Not bothering to clean the toilets is quite unacceptable and, for this reason, I can't recommend this pub unless you are just popping in for a quick one.

The Cutty Sark Tavern, Greenwich

I was there during the early part of yesterday evening. We got a good table upstairs overlooking the river and I drank excellent Adnams Broadside. We didn't want to eat but the food looked good. The bar staff were very pleasant and helpful and the clientelle seemed calm and civilised. I'll revisit when I am in the area.
