The Old Duke, Bristol

well i hear what some folks are saying, but i love this pub. i don't have the time or money for much pub-hopping these days, but i always enjoy this place. i like the characters and rowdiness and last time i was there, the bar staff were excellent; obviously enjoying themselves and grinning at everyone. the atmosphere was great and we enjoyed something of a summer's evening at one of the infamous sheelanagig shows. lots of sweaty dancing and happy faces.

it may not be the cleanest most sterile pub i've visited, but that is sometimes the way it goes and i'd rather a damn good jaw-wagging with friendly strangers than to sit nursing a lonely pint in a clinically perfect gastro any day.

I think the reviewer below must be in a different pub! We have always found the hospitality and quality of food to be more than satisfactory. There is always a friendly smile behind the bar and the beers are kept in excellent condition. I have been to The Eldon a few times on a Sunday night for music recently and have been thoroughly impressed with the exceptional standard. Good work everyone.

I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY'VE TRENDIFIED THIS PUB!!! Why oh why are all our characterful inns and quirky pubs being turned into homogenised, sterilised, bland, boring drinks dispensaries??? We used to have such a laugh in here, admittedly it was pretty grimy, but the fun factor always overlooked the aesthetics. BRING BACK OUR MAD OLD PUBS and somebody stop these awful pub companies wrecking the life and vivacity of our traditionally sociable, enjoyable late night watering holes, where we can relax and be ourselves. There you go, rant over. But you know I'm right. I really, really hope the new owners are sensitive to the pub's past. Will report in once I've visited...

I used to drink in this pub four or five years ago. It may've been on the scuzzy side, but there was always a great time to be had, always some off-the-wall characters and with music every night, I felt I could always head there for a reliable laugh. It does seem to be an unfortunate trend that pubs with a great party atmosphere accumulate grime, but I know I'd rather have a good time than a clinical one. I was very, very sad to hear it's been thoroughly made over. I hope the building keeps some of its mischievous love for life and imbibes the new owners with it!

The new owners have redecorated and made it a light and cheerful atmosphere inside. There is no longer a pool table which adds loads more space for eating tables, and the food is really, really fantastic. They source some free range and organic products, including one ale, one lager, one cider and various spirits. They have an extensive and unusual wine list, and the Sunday Roast will keep you going all week! Friendly bar staff and a good 'off the beaten track' feel that makes the experience more personal. It's a great place to meet friends, chat and escape the rest of the city.
