Royal Oak Inn, Staffhurst Wood

FOOD 1/3: While the menu is certainly interesting, it is not great value for money. We ordered 2 Beef Wellington's at 22, chicken breast at 12 and steak and kidney pie at 12, the last of which was the only one considered excellent. One of the beef Wellington's was removed from the bill as it was too raw and chicken breast was a bit chewey.

LOCATION 1/1: Probably a little bit out of the way for just about everyone, but once there, it's well worth it. On a country road, outside seating with view of the fields.

SERVICE 3/3: Very attentive staff. Baby chair offered, cleaned and set up very quickly. Complaint handled very efficiently with the specific dish removed from the bill.

DRINK 3/3: Very good value for money wine list and a good selection of ales.

Even with the problem dish, we'd certainly go back on the chance that it was an exception, rather than a rule.

The Seven Stars, Leigh

FOOD 3/3: Excellent Sunday roast (nothing else served on Sundays). Brought within 15 minutes of ordering.
LOCATION 1/1: Countryside with nice garden. Inside is separated into a bar and restaurant area. Children under 14 not allowed inside.
SERVICE 2/3: Everyone is very helpful, but garden tables could be cleared faster.
DRINK 1/3: Good selection of beer and soft drinks. Only English wines loses it two points.

The White Horse, Epsom

We went to this pub after finding it on this site and now happily give it 10 marks:

FOOD 2/3: Exquisite. Small menu, caters to varied preferences and extremely well prepared. All produce is from local farms apparently, which just adds to the appeal. Camembert fondue thoroughly recommended. Note that prices are gastro-pub, rather than traditional, but that can be forgiven considering quality. Still 1 point off, though.

LOCATION 1/1: Although on a busy road, the garden is behind so the noise cannot be heard. There is a fenced children playground. Tables are nicely spaced out so there is privacy.

SERVICE 3/3: The drinks are actually brought to you if you want. Staff are very friendly and helpful.

DRINK 3/3: Some real ales, some imported lagers and some white beers. Wine list also has a good selection.

There is also live music at weekends, which earnt it the bonus point.

The Cricketers, Croydon

LOCATION/SIZE/LAYOUT - 6/10
Small seating area outside is very pleasant, irrespective of the trams that go past every 4-5 minutes on average. The bar is pretty large and generally serviced by at least two people, so there is no waiting for drinks.

DRINKS' SELECTION - 7/10

SERVICE - 9/10

FOOD - 4/10
There is no food served in the evening, other than some unappealing sandwiches. Daytime offering is not much better, consisting mostly of fried off-the-shelf stuff.

ATMOSPHERE - 8/10

OTHER - 6/10
Pub quiz on Thursdays. Questions not thoroughly researched, but potential for a fairly substaintial prize.
