The George, Brighton

Excellent vegetarian and vegan food -- the menu even lists which drinks are veggie-friendly. The beer garden is so small that the sun only peeks in for the early part of the afternoon, but at least it's sheltered from the wind. Well worth seeking out for a pub lunch, even if you're usually a carnivore.

Gemini, Brighton

There's not much going for this bar except its location, but it doesn't need anything else. Lots of tables outside on the seafront, although you may have to wait a while to snag one on a sunny day. And if it's busy, beware the queues for the toilets! Table service only. Closed in winter.

The Fortune of War, Brighton

Great for watching the beachlife if you can get a window seat and a handy spot to retreat from a sudden shower. It's just a shame that the selection of drinks is woeful. A disappointing use of a potentially amazing location.

The Hove Place, Hove

A fairly indifferent pub inside (although one of the few in the area where you can get food other than roasts on a Sunday), what makes this Place special is the large and attractive beer garden. Decent outdoor seating is strangely rare in Brighton and Hove so it's hard to beat on a sunny day.

The Coopers Cask, Brighton

Once a pub so good that I preferred not to recommend it (for fear of making it even busier), the Coopers has lost a little of its magic recently. Food is still excellent and generously portioned but the specials menu is less varied and enticing since chef Jonboy left. On the other hand, good pints of HSB and Harvey's Best to wash it down mean there are few finer places in Hove for a lazy lunch. No longer god-like in its greatness, perhaps, but still great.
