The Windmill, Mayfair

You must try one of the pies in the upstairs restaurant. Best I've ever had - not cheap but worth every penny. I don't normally eat in pubs but I'll be coming back here. Service was good too.

The Dog and Duck, Soho

This has been my favourite Soho pub for a while now. It's a lovely building, the beer's usually good and not too expensive, and I can often find a seat upstairs. Unfortunately the service is so bad I'm considering a change in allegiance.

At least two of the women working there seem to treat customers as an inconvenience, especially if you want food. I could also do without the loud music at weekends - is that really what anyone wants from a Sunday night drink? This place could be near perfect if only the staff had a better attitude. If the situation doesn't improve I'll be going elsewhere in future.

The Knights Templar, Chancery Lane

As Wetherspoons pubs go this is definitely one of the better ones. Nice decor, and I have to say the service was surprisingly great. Mind you, go elsewhere if you want food. Mine was barely cooked.

The Greyhound, Kensal Green

There are worse pubs to have a pint in; it's not smoky or noisy, which are big pluses in my book. However, the ale selection is limited (only Adnams Bitter lately) and the food comes in snack-size portions at Ritz-style prices. My flatmate keeps bringing me there as it's the local, but to be honest I'd have more fun staying at home with a bottle. If you're after a meal, the food is far better and even a little cheaper round the corner at the Paradise.

The Seven Stars, Chancery Lane

Something of a Marmite pub it seems. Personally, I'm on the side that loves it. They serve a great pint of Harvey's and it's characterful without being cliquey. I will grant that service is occasionally on the slow side, but I'm happy to wait. If you find yourself offended by suits, you are encouraged to seek out a pub not situated behind the Royal Courts of Justice. My uniform is jeans and a t-shirt and I have never been looked at askance.

The Blackfriar, Blackfriars

Should be tried at least once. A gorgeous interior and a great selection of ales, tragically spoiled by the said ales being far too cold. I can't say I noticed the smell, but a friend of mine has commented on it too so perhaps that's just my faulty sinuses. Your mileage may vary, but do check it out for the decor if nothing else.
