The Duke Of York, Iddesleigh

This has got to be THE quintissential English village pub. Situated in the village square next to the church, a thatched roof, original beams, roaring log fire (in the winter), great atmosphere, an extensive menu and superb food. Add to that a good range of ales straight from the cask, and friendly staff. The only downside is that this is a small pub which is very popular with the locals and it can get pretty busy so seating is at a premium. Food is served right through from noon til 9-10pm, so best visit early evening to guarantee a seat.

The Castle Of Comfort, East Harptree

This pub has a reputation in the area for it's food, but on my first (and only) visit I was a little disappointed with the limited menu and the food presentation. It's good 'pub grub' but for something a bit special you'd be better off going to the Slabhouse Inn in West Horrington.

New Inn, Priddy

A great location, with a good selection of real ales, but the decor and general atmosphereof this pub lets it down badly. It's easy to see why the Queen Vic (also in Priddy) is always busy when the New Inn isn't.

The George Inn, Croscombe

A great little pub on the main road through Croscombe. Good beer and food. The Canadian landlord takes a genuine interest in his customers and loves to chat. The guitar evenings on a Tuesday are a real treat.

The Ploughboy, Green Ore

A decent, honest, no-frills pub. Good beer and food. Tables cannot be booked in advance, so if you plan on eating here, best get in reasonably early to ensure you get a table.

The Slabhouse Inn, West Horrington

An excellent country pub, packed full of genuine antique clocks and barometers. Friendly staff and superb food. You will need to book in advance to guarantee getting a table. Best go for the restaurant, which is non smoking, as the bar can get a bit smokey. The only down side to the Slab House is the poor selection of real ales.
