The Retro Bar, Strand

Very mixed gay bar, a bit cliquey but I'd imagine because of its success it attracts the same crowd over time. Friendly bar staff of all ages and a good selection of music bordering towards the more indie and rock sound, although hosts a Eurovision night once a month. Good selection of drinks, good quizzes and excellent random DJ nights. Can get overly busy at times but spread over two floors means you can usually escape to a table. Used to be incredibly smokey, I'd imagine that isn't a problem now. Recommended.

Via Fossa, Canary Wharf

I suppose the darkened corners and naff viking sofas in lurid colours are a nice distraction for the bland brightly lit Canary Wharf corporate offices, but it doesn't wash on the rest of us. I mean, yeah, you could say this place has character, but that's more too with the old dock building than what they've put in there. Drinks and food are overly priced, but expected for the area. More a place to go on a rainy winter day for a cosy sunday lunch than a drink filled party evening.

The Beluga Cafe, Canary Wharf

Serves the Canary Wharf crowd with pretentious bar service and overpriced drinks, but for us remaining eastend drinkers it all seems terribly ladidah. Hosts a local gay night once a month for the local fruits in suits but if that's your thing you'll have more fun down the road in the White Swan or Chariots at Limehouse. Food was decent although service was a bit po-faced. A place to go if you want to look flash with the cash and feel part of the yuppie crowd.

The Harcourt Arms, Marylebone

Fabulous pub favourite with the London Swedes, hosts many a Scandinavian themed nights and a great selection of drinks. Plus a cosy back garden with plenty of character. Can get very busy during events but only adds to the party atmosphere of the place.

19:20, Clerkenwell

Bizarre layout, strange decor, hideous bar service, expensive drinks, rude staff and tatty toilets. Fits in well with the local area for those alone. Avoid.

The Black Horse, Stepney

What was a relaxed trashy eastend gay boozer with character became a 'trying to be trendy' cocktail style bar, admittedly, quite decent for five minutes before the paint started peeling and the local drug clientele started up shop in its darkened corners. Now bordering on the downright scary, if not from the horrendous 'am i bovvered?' bar staff then the almost accepted attitude of the local homophobic girls that inhabit the place on a saturday night.

The Angel, West Ham

Trashy run-down Stratford gay dance bar similar to the White Swan in Limehouse yet without the character or community spirit of the latter. The drinks are as cheap as the people who inhabit the place as well as the make up on the faded photos of the endless drag acts displayed on the walls. Not exactly a place that represents being gay in the 21st century, but sometimes we all need a reminder of what went before when blacked up windows, leather caps and HI-NRG were the norm for the gay scene.

The Spread Eagle, West Ham

Turned into a gay pub around 2004 and was quite a nice tasteful local with decent decor including a real log fire and nice atmosphere. All went a bit 'clubby' a year later and became a strange dance bar that was always empty before completely shutting down with little fanfare around 2006. Now ruined by a cash and carry having completely ripped out the inside and the old frontage. A real shame.
