The London Stone, Cannon Street

About 15 of us turn up for the Christmas Dinner. My friend is told that we can have anything from the menu except for the turkey dinner and the chocolate cake. What the hell is the point in a Christmas Dinner if you can't have turkey?

My first course is advertised as a prawn cocktail with marie rose sauce and 2 slices of brown bread. What I got was a few prawns smothered in mashed up potato salad wrapped in a bit of salmon. Served with white bread. No sauce. A bit of a shambles but not too bad.

Main course was two pieces of over-cooked cold razor-thin slices of beef and a few roast potatoes served with a red wine sauce which had the consistency of water. A bit grim really

Dessert was a frozen solid block of what was allegedly roulade.

And the fourth course was coffee and a mince pie - the coffee looked and tasted like dishwater and they were out of mince pies.

Other people there had other issues with whatever they ordered. One of my friends got her vegetarian option whilst the rest of us were have desserts. She also had to take the orders for everyone as the staff were unavailable to do this!

4 courses for 15 quid. Absolutely tragic really, the worst venue I've ever had the misfortune of eating in. Don't go there to eat.

I can't think of anything better than "a pub where every one dresses the same, likes the same music, is the same age". It means you can go in there and you're guaranteed to have something in common with everyone in there, meaning you can pretty much talk to anyone knowing they'll be on the same wavelength as you are, enjoy the same music, go to the same clubs etc.

The Fox and Firkin, Lewisham

It seems to be called The Fox and Firkin again now? The Friday alternative night seems to have gone now too.

A great little pub. Friendly staff, good beer and really nice food. The kebabs are well recommended.

The Hill, Greenwich

After several weeks of redecoration the Barley Mow has now been transformed into the latest gastro-pub to arrive in the Greenwich area and has been given a new name as well; The Hill.

The bar area has been cut down to half it's original size, it now has the usual selection of standard pub beers, cider, and Adnams for the real ale drinkers. There doesn't appear to be much in the way of anything else except for a huge selection of wines. The prices are quite steep for the area, a pint will cost you upwards of 3.

The pool table and darts area has gone, as has the traditional pub decor. It's been replaced with retaurant seating and oil paintings for sale adorned on the walls. The garden has been given a full makeover as well, wood decking along with solid wooden chairs and tables, a built in BBQ and various tasteful potted plants give the garden a vague oriental feel.

The food is good if a little expensive, the manager assured us that as they were just starting they were still in a learning phase and offered my girlfriend a reduction on her meal. The bar and restaurant staff all seemed to be very friendly and helpful.

Essentially this pub now falls between local restaurants like Inside and pubs like The Union - somewhere to go for a meal but aimed at the crowd with a larger disposable income. I doubt they'll be getting many regulars from the Royal Hill council estate over the road.

A local pub for local goths!

A great pub, but as has been mentioned to death here (pun intended), you'll have trouble getting in unless you look the part or you're a regular.

Definitely a must see if you're of an alternative persuasion though. If you're not, you probably won't like it and probably won't get in!

The Greenwich Union, Greenwich

Originally the Fox and Hounds, the pub was given a face lift and a name change to offer something different to it's next door neighbour, the Richard I.

It's very much a pub targetted at the ale connoisseur - those looking for something a bit different and a bit special. There's not much in the way of lager or alcopops but that's not why you're there. It's the unique range of delicious beers that make this establishment rather unique.

The furniture is not the best, but the food is good and the bar staff are friendly and often offer a try before you buy on the various beers they have.
