The Sporting Page, Chelsea

This pub could be great. The atmosphere on footie nights is really good and there is a fair selection of beers and lager. Management ar friendly. On the downside the staff are pretty vacuous. Bearing in mind the price of drinks the staff should not be bargain basement. As a rule the barmaids hover over one area, forget the rest of the bar and have as much character as a paper cup. Having pretty-ish girls might seem the way to go to the landlord but what they need are staff who know their job.

The Cricketers, Richmond

Great place in the summer after a game. The crowd spills onto the Common and fun is to be had by all. The beer is potable, bar small, staff better suited to MacDonalds, but who cares, its a great pub.

The Sun, Richmond

This is the place to go after a game. The conversation revolves around rugby and despite the fact it is frequented by plastic London Welsh fans (why don't they go to Wales if they're home sick)the atmosphere is always raucous. There are always rugby legends in this place who are happy to talk to you if you buy them a drink. On the downside the beer is average and there is an East European barman who doesn't know the difference between ale and lager. Overall this place is worth trecking to, the walls are adorned with rugby memorabilia and if you are a devotee of the oval ball, you will fall in love with this place

The Pigs Ear, Chelsea

This place tries to be a restaurant and a pub and happily succeeds at both tasks. OK, the pub itself is very nice. It is presented as a Parisian bar: steel surface bar, eclectic tables, post modern art (Parisian bars are'nt like this really.). It does take itself seriously but then again it is in Chelsea's top 5 pubs. The beer is nothing exceptional and the clientele are annoyingly of the hoo rah Henry variety. However after a slight nudge they respect your personal space. The food is good and inexpensive, about 30 per head. The feeling you get in this place is of quiet satisfaction:-just a couple of you, or a crowd, you'll have a good time. In addition, it's just off the river and this is the loveliest part of London to stroll in the evening.

The Chelsea Ram, Chelsea

This place thinks it is a restaurant cum local pub. As a result of its compromise it is neither. The food is unspectacular, the beer tastes of arsenic and the clidentele are insufferable. Typically few are from Chelsea and all wish they were. Could they all please stay at home?! However a half talented landlord could turn this place into something good. All is not lost.

The Worlds End Distillery & Restaurant, Chelsea

OK this place has had a view incarnations in recent history but it remains intrinsically the same. The architecture is an astounding example of Victorian excellence and the interior is appealing. The beer on offer is the same as you would find just about anywhere but the staff, irrespective of the fact they rarley last, are very friendly, even if they don't really have a clue about beer. It's located on the most interested part of the King's Road and serves pretty much as an oasis amid a desert of rancid bars.

Ye Old Mitre, Holborn

I'm a Londoner and never knew this place existed until last week. It is the best surprise I have had in a long time. Once you actually find it, you realise the place is full of character, which is frequented by local suits and discerning customers. It even has an outdoor toilet which adds to the charm. It is very reminiscent of the Cheshire Cheese off Fleet Street with regard to the small hiding places and general decor-I don't think this place has changed for centuries. I reckon this place is up there with both the Antelope and the Grenardier, both in Belravia, for its general feel and ambience.

The staff are professional with regard to their knowledge of beer and service and the Deuchars is certainly one to remember. The place is heaving on a post work Friday evening but it is definately worth a ruck and maul to get to the bar.
