Ensign Ewart, Edinburgh

Despite being named after a hero of the Battle of Waterloo, this pub has a policy of refusing to serve military personnel in uniform! What a disgrace!

The Partridge, Partridge Green

Partridge Green is very lucky! We enjoyed great Dark Star beers (Revelation really hit the spot) and Lilly's Star Gazer cider served by pleasant and efficient staff. Good, honest food from local suppliers (Hutchings is well-known as probably the best butcher's in the Horsham area) served at reasonable prices in a relaxed restaurant area with plenty of space. A friendly atmosphere all round means that we will be back!

The Sussex Oak, Warnham

Went to a reception after a memorial service in the church opposite. These can be a bit of a trial, given that one is mourning the loss of a friend or loved one, but the staff were excellent, coping very well with the sudden rush of more than 200 people. Excellent Timothy Taylor Landlord and Surrey Hills Greensand IPA, and a Dark Star beer (not Hophead) and another Sussex micro were also on the hand pumps as well as London Pride. The hot snacks were ideal for a cold and crisp afternoon when you want a little food but not too much. The regular menu looked good, and if I lived in Warnham, I would be in there every evening.

After taking a rest over Christmas and the New Year, the weekly quiz is moving to Wednesday. The first quiz of 2012 will be on Wednesday 18 January.

Black Horse, Nuthurst

Thursday night is quiz night! 2 per person, with 50% going to St Catherine's Hospice. First prize is a gallon of beer (donated by the pub), second prize is 10, and there is a Rollover Jackpot awarded every four weeks to the team that accumulates most points in that period.

If you think you know what connects Edinburgh, Dover and Edinburgh, if you can remember which team was undefeated in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, if you know when you're in the Rhubarb Triangle, then you should join us on Thursday! And if you visit the quiz as a result of reading this, let me know (I'm the quizmaster) and I'll buy you a pint!
