The White Hart Inn, South Wingfield

Recently reopened under new management after an extensive refubishment. My childhood local and near to where my parents still live. Now serves top-quality Italian food with a great wine list. Well worth driving too but book first as weekends especially can be full.

The Old Yew Tree Inn, South Wingfield

A perennial favourite that has not disappointed yet. Well-kept (if small) range of real ales. Extensive menu and well-cooked food. Friendly landlord who spent years in Thailand so the Thai food section of the menu is real and authentic, using original ingredients imported direct. Strongly recommended, but go soon because it's up for sale.

The Spotted Cow, Holbrook

Really enjoyed this one. Went for lunch for the first time yesterday. Great carvery, excellent home-cooked food from the a-la-carte menu, all from fresh ingredients. Friendly, welcoming staff and generous portions. And they have well-kept Jennings Cumberland Ale on tap. What more can one want?

The Coborn Arms, Bow

This is a great pub. A traditional, old-fashioned East End local with a difference. Just down from where I stay when in London. Friendly landlord. Very knowledgeable about wine. Quite happy to recommend cheaper, good wines rather than the more expensive ones. Great food ... but order main courses from the freshly cooked dishes in the display rather than from then menu. Friendly locals too: lunchtime crowd is office workers, in the evening, people from the houses and flats nearby. Much better than the Morgan Arms down the road.
