Story in the Derby Telegraph today says the Spotted Cow's owner has been heavily fined and banned from running any food establishment as a result of a series of inspections by the local hygiene police. Also says the pub is no longer in operation. Can't imagine it will reopen with the Dead Poet's on its doorstep and the Hollybush at Makeney and the Queens Head at Little Eaton not far away.

Appeared to be closed when I visited on a Friday evening. Big pile of uncollected mail behind the front door. However, several upstairs windows open and a few used glasses scattered around outside.

Nearby, a large extended family of slack jawed hillbillies watched our various attempts to gain entry without summoning up the gumption to warn us that it was closed. Idiots!

If in Holbrook, go the Dead Poets and don't waste time on the Spotted Cow.

Dreadful foodie pub. The 'exclusively brewed house bitter at 3.20 a pint was cloudy and at that price is a rip off. The smell of cooking was overpowering. The barman was far too obsequious and the final straw was the background music. I am a great fan of the late Karen Carpenter, but 'Goodbye to Love' every other track was just too much.
