The Star Tavern, Belgravia

Staff looked very inexperienced on my last visit, but they made up for it with friendliness and enthusiasm. ESB and Pride were both good, though pricey.

Recommended.

Queens Larder, Bloomsbury

Friendly though not chatty barstaff, okay selection of ales (and well kept). Usually packed in the after-office hours, quieting down in the evening. Food's decent and there's additional seating upstairs.

I'm only an occasional visitor, but I've never seen anything but perfectly civil behaviour from the staff.

The Lamb, Bloomsbury

Never been the greatest fan of Young's, not even before the merger with Wells. Even so this used to be a pretty good pub a few years back. However, service have gone downhill the last couple of years. Seems now to be largely staffed by disinterested student part-timers. A shame really.

The Argyll Arms, Oxford Circus

Stylish interior, and a good meeting place for a quick one when in the West End. Have had some unfortunate experiences here over the years, like ales being off, pints not topped up, bartenders unable/unwilling to understand English, even shortchanged on an occasion. Still decent for an early afternoon drink, but best avoided in evenings when it's usually crowded and too noisy.

The Plough, Bloomsbury

Have been to the Plough on and off for a few years when in London. The range of ale is not the most exciting, but I have no real complaints about the quality of it. Have only eaten there a couple of times, it's been okay. Good with TV's showing football, although lately the staff have seemed a little uninformed about what's on (even though they have been advertising the game outside). Service is a little on the slow side as it seems there's always someone brand new behind the bar, but in my experience this is a common feature for a number of central London pubs. Seems to attract a good few tourists.

Not a great pub, but not a bad one either.
