The Famous Royal Oak, Muswell Hill

Final refuge in Muswell/Crouch End after the demise of the Well and the Princess Alexandra down the hill.

I think the external look, criticised in other comments, has saved this pub from gastroization. Noone in their right mind would try and make this a haute cuisine destination and I am truly thankful.

Nice London Pride, pool table (but round a corner so you can ignore it if you want), TVs but not too obtrusive. I once sat through an electric storm on the porch - they got soaked serving us refils at our table outside, lovely.

If this one shuts too I'm moving house...

The Well, Muswell Hill

I can't believe this place has closed. Absolutely dreadful news. See my comment below; there was nowhere else like it for miles.

Ice Wharf, Camden

Weekend evenings they will frisk you so hard you feel you're an Arab trying to get on an El-Al. You are manifestly over 40 but ID will be required. Minimum twenty minute wait at the bar.

However in the week it can be a nice place for a cheap unfussed pint in Camden; always a selection of guest beers and not too badly served. Hardly ever even approaches capacity. Really nice outside bit by the canal.

Previous reviewer: "Jekyll and Hyde" - haha. Exactly.

The Well, Muswell Hill

Serves the important function of being the last place to get a 'no-frills' pint in Muswell Hill. Fantastically unpretentious. Prices have gone up recently but still very reasonable. More jokes-man-in-the-pub stories than most town centres put together.

One-time vistors will wonder what I'm on about but if you go there enough you'll start to love it.

Crown and Goose, Camden

Nice interior but ruined by really disappointing, overpriced food. Annoying 'discretional' service charge. Beer kept badly; London Pride was disgusting. Might be acceptable if you seek 'character' and want to sit at a wobbly table for a pint of lager or two but fails in too many respects to get a positive review.
