The Crosse Keys, Bank

Not my first choice for an after work drink but the range of beer here is the widest in the City. 24 hand pulls and the beers are handily advertised on TV screens above the bar. Had an excellent couple of pints of GK Abbot last week. The decor is far more opulent than a typical 'Spoon. The building is magnificent. Marble pillars, rococo ceilings and tiled mosiac floor around the bar. Having said that, it's sheer size makes for a rather impersonal atmosphere.

Very, very expensive.

The Counting House, Bank

Flagship Fullers pub on Cornhill. Beautiful, historic interior. Excellent and efficient staff leads to minimal waiting time at the bar. The food's terrific and have never had a bad pint there.

The New Moon, Bank

Come in here regularly for after - work drinks, more for convenience than anything else. Having said that, it's pleasant to spill out into the market during clement weather. Being a Greene King pub, its beers feature prominently but would like to see a more imaginative guest line - up. Aspall cider on draught. Screens to watch sport.

The Cuckfield, Wanstead

A real Jeykll & Hyde of an unbranded M&B Castle pub. Most expensive in Wanstead. Does have a lot going for it - nice interior, good selection of drinks, lovely beer garden. Sadly this is all let down by consistently poor service. Do not bother ordering food there when it's busy as it will take an absolute age to arrive. I am not a person who is prepared to wait over an hour for a pub meal. The quality of the food has also been exceptionally poor in the past, which is unforgivable given the restaurant prices they charge. Service at the bar is invariably slooooooow. Some good staff and some who need training. Popular quiz night on Tuesdays. Attracts a mixed crowd - well- heeled Wanstead folk during the week with an influx of younger, louder patrons at the weekends.

A real shame about the service as it really lets down an otherwise good pub.
