this pub should be heaving...but it isn't. the staff seem o.k if a little countryfied, and the food stepped straight out of the 'mike'...ouside is lovely in the summer

Having grown up in nearby Alfold 40+ years ago, this pub was always considered to be a little better than average by us locals.

However, recent years have seen a variety of 'management styles' applied without thought beyond the till so I genuinely wish all success to the new 'keepers of the ale' if they are going to put this lovely old boozer back where it belongs!! i.e.
* Properly prepared and cooked food. (throw the pre-cooked catering swill to the nearby swans)
* Sensible prices (see surrounding pubs)
* Ban bad language in all bars.
* Rotate beer selection for quality - not quantity.
* Re-create a 'local pub atmospere where all can go.

This pub has now changed hands and is a free house. New landlord has turned it around from 2004 (see previous comment) and it offers good food and a typical local atmosphere. Situated next to a canal tow path and turning point with a large garden with adventure playground equipment it is now a good spot for a beer, a meal and a walk afterwards.

Until very recently used to be a very nice relaxed country pub. Since new local management (believe to be under king & barnes) has gone down hill very rapidly - not very friendly any more, staff are abusive and no longer what you would expect in such a pleasent area.

Would definitely not recommend families to visit.
