Arrived at 1.52 pm to be told bluntly by the barmand that no food was available (despite being advertised until 2 pm). Left quickly and went to the Golden Rule (best pub in Ambleside). spottiewattie17 - 18 Apr 2012 17:41
Looking for decent home cooked pub food in ambleside? This seems to be the recommended place. Lots of traditional pubs in the town but this is the only one that doesnt microwave them. Choice of real ales, which we were able to sample before making a decision. Food was OK. Live music on later. Mappiman - 3 Feb 2012 20:44
The beer was okay, but the food didn't smelled particularly appetising and when this pub had customers they all tended to be over 70. The room for the pool table is too small for it and the pub wasn't homely at all, despite the decor. StephanB - 23 Sep 2011 17:25
I have been going to Ambleside for many years now and our recent visit was just a wonderful as on previous occasions.....apart from our visit to a pub we have never visited before and certainly wont be going back to !!!! We went as entertainment had been advertised there on Thursday evenings.... We sat and had a drink of the local beer , sat and listened to the 'entertainment'. He was without a doubt the most boring singer I have ever witnessed. And when it came to the end of the night we were left in darkness to finish our drinks at 11.05pm !!! So my advise is dont ruin your lake district break , go to the Sportsman / Golden Rule or White Lion instead ... you wont go wrong !!! megan101 - 19 Oct 2010 18:06
First and LAST time at this one... why pay good money to drink in very tired surroundings, with little to no atmosphere, and an outdated musician no doubt bashing out the same old tunes he's been playing for years. A few tips to the licensee would be (1) sack the old grey haired guy with the guitar - going by his body language and facial expression (or should I say lack of it) clearly shows he's obviously not enjoying his work - entertainment value 0/10 (leaves no room for him to snigger at amateurs doing their level best at a karaoke in a nearby pub a few nights earlier). (2) if you're going to call time smack on 11pm, at least give those who bought one for the road, time to get back to their tables before switching most of the lights off, making it quite clear their custom was no longer welcome. Conclusion: there are many fine watering holes in Ambleside so the next time we visit the lakes we'll be giving the Unicorn Inn a wide berth. sir_prised - 19 Oct 2010 10:27
