| We only went inside to actually order then sat outside. Appeared to be a very eclectic mix of styles inside which to be honest didn’t look appealing – bit too open plan as well. The barmaid was a nice lass, there were five beers of which we had three. Stilton Porter at 5%+ isn’t the best type to have as the first pint of the evening…… Either way, all three beers were good so we left happy. Worth finding – it’s up the hill from Waitrose. | Comments over the past year by "Blackthorn" and "Stamfordian" provide a very fair assessment. Vibrant pub on a more important road west from Scotgate (and the Green Man) that seems to be doing all the key things well. Plenty of outdoor drinking space, lots going on and well chosen range of beers. Arctium_lappa - 28 Jan 2011 00:17 |
| For years a nondescript and at times struggling pub with regular changes of licensee. The present licensees have turned it into one of the best Stamford pubs for beer drinkers and, in the best way, a local pub for local people (but a warm welcome for all). The excellent Sharp's Doom Bar, unusually, is one of the permanent beers offered, LocAle is fully supported and there are occasional beer festivals. When in Stamford, don't miss it. | Our next pub on our crawl was the Jolly Brewer on Foundry Road. We have been to this Good Beer Guide pub before with its L shaped room round the bar, but there was no way we were going to get in today. I got as far as opening the door, but it was packed with a noisy crowd of footy fans watching TV, and I could not see the bar for tightly packed bodies let alone see what beers were on. The board outside showed 5 real ales available, but we had to move on. Previous rating left on. gillhalfpint - 4 Apr 2010 10:20 |
| I can only really echo what others have said. A very good, proper pub, located slightly away from the town centre but worth the short walk to get there. Friendly bar staff, a real fire, dart board and a pool table. Long wood panelled bar with hundreds of beer mats on the wall behind. Several TV's dotted around the place, all showing sports fixtures. This is my only criticism really, I'm not sure there's any need for quite so many - especially the one right at the end of the bar. At least the volume was very low, or even off in some cases. Good choice of beers on tap, with four of the pumps proudly sporting Camra's LocAle logo. They were Doom Bar (that's obviously the one that wasn't local), JHB, Piston Bob, Winter Session Ale and Barn Ale, Ciders were Strongbow (unfortunately) and Weston's Old Rosie.
