I have been in another couple of times, I can't really say that anything has changed. The one positive I would add is that it is probably the best of the pubs close to The County Ground (Swindon Town FC), but there are better options if you walk into town.

Went in las t night, briefly, before and after watching a charity match at Swindon Town.
For me the place is soulless. It's an estate pub out of place.
On the plus side the prices were good, there were TVs everywhere for watching sport, at least 2 pool tables, quiz night Thursday and it serves food. Oh! And the service was ok.
But the one real ale, Greene King IPA, wasn't good apparently, and no Speckled Hen.
I can't reccommend it unless you live on the doorstep, it's better than nothing.

I was the last landlord of the Malt and Hops,It was owned by Morrells of Oxford.Greeneking bought out Morrells. No Ballifs were ever in the pub, the clearence was done by Greeneking prior to to eing refurbishished into was is now The Merlin. The name was chosen by customers in a postal ballot. Yes the Magic roundabout played a part in the name change, buy mainly because of the fact that Merlin engines were produced in the town for the spitfire. There were pictures of the engines in the pub while I as there. Myself and Angela stayed for another 3 years before leaving and moving back up North. There was a massive Locals presence in the Pub, can,t say now though, been gone for 2 years. When first done out it was a grounbreaking design, very much cutting edge in evry way.The pubs in this style ere called :M: Series, all the pubs had to begin with the letter M. The one after The Merlin as the Messinger at Covingham. Hope this imfo is of some interest to someone.

DRANK HERE A FEW YEARS AGO BEFORE THE BAILIFFS MOVED IN AND STRIPPED EVERYTHING OUT.
TAKING AWAY ALL OF THE TRADITIONAL PUB STYLE BRIC A BRAC MAY HAVE CREATED MORE SPACE,BUT DOES NOTHING FOR THE CHARACTER OF THE PUB.
NOW NO PICTURES,NO WARMTH & NO FREINDLY LOCALS
ONE OR TWO OLD FACES BEHIND THE BAR
REALLY NEEDS THAT FAMILY FEEL AGAIN BOTH SIDES OF THE BAR

Now called the MERLIN, don't know if that's becoz of the MAGIC Roundabout just down the road or it's named after the engines. Not a bad place on football days, but generally suffers due to its location.
Real ale, food, big screen TV, garden.
