| little off the beaten track but as a result not too crowded and so a decent place to relax Nice beer, nice whisky and the staff were friendly Far better than most of the places nearby if you find yourself waiting for a train at Victoria Wookiee - 22 Sep 2011 17:49 |
| Excellent independent little boozer just out of Victoria station area. A couple of real ales on the bar of great taste and quality and the bar (maid) staff are very courteous - possible antipadean? Too many Aussie bar staff are proper 'Sheilas' but this babe wasn't - cute, fit and knew her stuff about real ale. A few more down me and she'd have been given ten good reasons to swap into dual nationality. Get a seat and relax after a long week at work and this place is a good as any on that part of town. Go give it a whirl. Mcloj - 13 Apr 2011 12:50 |
| I don't know about what it was like but perfectly acceptable last week late afternoon. AND try the homemade porks cratchings hmmmm! My Tim Landlord was good too. wogerthewacer - 5 Apr 2011 15:34 |
| In its previous guise as The Lord Burleigh, The Brass Monkey was a rough-and-ready locals-style establishment, which was of little interest to the passer by. Today, the approach is slightly different – and although perhaps not to everyone’s taste – is more appealing now than before. The unassuming, green-painted facade leads into dimly-lit bar area with laminate flooring and very little to engage the wandering eye. Although unobtrusive, the background music was stereotypically bland and added nothing to the experience. Towards the rear of the pub is a raised area where groups can lounge on the two leather sofas. The toilets are situated up the rickety staircase. My visit was on a recent weekday afternoon, so as you would expect, the clientele was seemingly made up of the local worker population. One surprise and genuine positive is the inclusion of two hand-pumps, saddled beside the selection of keg offerings: Adnam’s Bitter and Timothy Taylor’s, Landlord. The latter-mentioned was served in fine fettle – admittedly, another surprise – and priced at a reasonable £3.00. The two members of staff encountered – one of them an Aussie – were approachable and forthcoming in their service. To conclude: not an establishment a can envisage frequent visits too, but nevertheless, a bar with a few positives to counterbalance the inevitable negatives that accompany 21st century modern-style bars. . | This place is a lot less like a restaurant and more like a bar than the outside suggests and I was surprised to see Adnams and Landlord hand pumps, although the latter was off. It is only a small bar so a limited selection of Peroni, Amstel, Heineken, Becks, Strongbow and Guinness is available. The chilled background music was at a unobtrusive volume and there is a plasma screen which was off during my visit and I didn’t spot any ads for future sporting events so probably no Sky. This isn’t the sort of place that I would normally choose to drink in, but I can see the attraction as it is a nice little bar. Strongers - 4 Nov 2009 23:39 |
