user reviews of the Five Bells, Newmarket

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Very much a locals pub it feels. 4 pumps but only one with beer and that was Doom Bar - Why? Bland and no body but it was well kept. Surely there are better options if you want to encourage customers in?

NASTY. we were warned about this one by another pub, apparently yhere have been stabbings, underage boxing and regular strippers. it certainly lived up to its reputation. If you are planning a crawl miss this one out.

Due to recent trouble the pub is not permitted to sell alcohol.

Soft drinks and food available.

Licence under review.

Only current GBG entry in Newmarket. Had two handpumps on my visit and I tried a Wherry. Had to say I was disappointed in beer quality given it's in the GBG... may have just been an off day.

On our pub crawl last Friday we left this pub to near the end. We thought it would be the best as it is the only GBG listed pub. It is a former G/K pub which is always a good thing. Two hand pumps in use Woodfordes Wherry and Courage Directors available. There was a large bench where we sat that would sit many people. There is a display of bed pans on the wall. A TV was showing Euro 2008 and a dart board was available. In our opinion we were not that impressed and enjoyed a couple of other pubs in town more. Still just about in our top 3 of Newmarket's ale pubs.
