Dropped in for a pint last week and enjoyed a spot-on Otter Bitter at only £2.75 which is great value for money for this neck of the woods. Barmaid was friendly enough and whilst the place has obviously set its stall out to be a bit more upmarket there's still a pleasant pub feel to it. johnthechef - 20 Nov 2011 17:58
This pub does have a great location you can't deny that. Beer garden is good but it can be touristy which rightly or wrongly i will only give it a 6/10 montie49 - 10 Nov 2011 18:42
Have to disagree with previous commentors about friendliness of staff- I spent a couple of hours in the anchor on Friday whilst waiting for my mates to arrive in Beer and found them all, especially Darren, really polite, welcoming and chatty. Decent pints of Otter (which, for those complaining about the lack of beer choice, they had to battle extremely hard with Greene King to be allowed, at the request of their regulars), and nowhere near as expensive as I expected. Can't say anything about the food, but this is BEER in the evening, after all... spec - 2 Aug 2010 14:31
Nice looking pub in a fantastic location. Inside is a little dated and a bit of a mish mash of things all of which are a little dull. Had a couple of really good pints of Otter bitter, i can't remember the price i think it was under £3 (£2.65 i think) which for the location is good, the food however is where they have your pants down. Unfortunately, the bar staff will be my lasting memory of the Anchor Inn, Surly & impatient i think would best describe them. A "VERY" slim lady behind the bar i think would rather be anywhere else in the world rather than serving, and would much prefer it if you were some where else also. topPINT - 12 Jul 2010 16:06
We are reviewing on the basis of eating and drinking at this venue and knowing it well through having a second home in the area and a recent extremely bad experience here. Oh my goodness, where do I start. Don't be fooled by the lovely garden location. Steer well clear. You can always sit on the beach itself to admire the pretty view, and then eat and drink (or stay) at any of the much better pubs on the 'high street'. We encountered filthy, fly-filled toilets; dreadful food (in our opinion, the length of the multiple menus should tell you everything; and worst of all frighteningly aggressive service. Be warned, in our experience and opinion, a polite comment/request is seen as a criticism and was greeted by shouting, swearing aggressive, literally 'in your face' behaviour from the 'manager'!. Our advice would be, do not take any children here! He apparently doesn't let their presence calm his behaviour in any way. We fully intend to complain to the highest authorities regarding our experience and have started that process today. If youre an ale fan, there are more local ales served elsewhere. cliffface - 7 Jun 2010 11:19
