user reviews of Mary Janes, Aldgate

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Went here for a friend's birthday last month and spent most of my time outside! Inside was over crowded and had to constantly dodge the pervy 30+ city blokes who thought it was cool to go on about how much they earned and putting drinks on their plastic (dahling), which held up the queues at the bar. Won't even bother starting on the irritating, gobby chavs that were also stumbling about.
The staff were pretty rubbish, apart from one of the barmen who made a real effort to keep an eye on the order of people waiting to be served at the bar, but the drinks were ridiculously over-priced and most of the cocktails were a con as the glasses were filled about 80% crushed ice to 20% actual drink. Don't really want to pay £7 + for a glass of ice really. Stick to a Kir Royale or something if you want a cocktail- at least then you will get a proper drink, rather than just a mouthful!

Décor – Over-done. Arrtwo (above) sums it up; it is no different on the inside. They could have at least done something about the toilets which stink!

Ambiance – Brash and full of lecherous mid 30s guys.

Staff – Surly, inefficient. They say if you pay peanuts you get monkeys. I believe the people who trained these bar staff were the ones on peanuts. Yes it was busy, but the staff have great tendency to serve he who shouts loudest and frequently give over the wrong drinks.

Pricing - Over the top and the food was outrageous given the deep fried platters that I spotted sliding past.

Overall - I found the whole place rather offensive, including the Chavs; popping outside for a cigarette (Yes, I know I should give-up) we were constantly harassed by dodgy mini cabs, whilst the doorman stood there and watched. The first write-up in this section was obviously undertaken by a member of staff!

It was so bad we de-camped to the pub over the road.

I've not been in but it looks like a baroque brothel from the outside!
