Times have changed and Pubs have to adapt or close but the Malt Shovel must be doing something right as its usually busy and you can't say that about enough Pubs these days. Of course if you are more interested in parking your car than drinking good beer in a vibrant atmosphere, the it's definitely not for you. sailorjim - 27 Nov 2010 16:16
Still not going in, part of the new thinking there is 'Lets put more tables in the car park.RESULT!! Now you cannot park unless on double yellows. Lets attract the PLOD to the fact I am in the pub!! What a no brainer. cryptomech - 22 Oct 2009 20:19
Nice traditional canalside pub, once upon a time. Now has 2 (yes,2) screens in it and the atmosphere has departed cryptomech - 11 Aug 2009 19:10
The Shovel used to be a really old world pub with folk singers, morris dancers, a fire and a huge English Mastiff. It has now been 'done up'. Quite smart inside although all the character has now gone as have the ales albeit Pedigree remains. Friendly but some pretence and the makeover have taken away the character. goalman2000 - 9 Aug 2009 21:16
Always liked his pub since first went in about 30 years ago. Visited on Friday and the Pedigree was still spot on. However they seem to have given the place a bit of a makeover and painted over some of the old panelling etc which has been unchanged forever - vandalism in my view and I have to mark down accordingly. Traditional pub interiors (as this was) really should be better protected. Tigerdrinker - 25 Jan 2009 16:05
