definitely set up for the restaurant goer....however, had ale on pumps when I visited, maybe no more keg beer?

if a nice day, you can sit outside, though half the garden was sealed off for the barn - whether that was temporary as there was a function due to take place, or whether it is now the norm, can't say for sure.

as there is no bar as such, don't go there for a drink on a wet day...otherwise you'll be sitting in a restaurant supping beer..or getting wet outside..not for a session, but ok if passing by..or on a country pub crawl..

Now purely a restaurant so you must book a meal if you want a drink. Only keg beer on offer so no real ale or cider (source: Sussex Drinker - Spring 2011).

What a shame. This pub looks so good from the outside but the manager in particular is clueless.

Went there for Sunday lunch, two beers available, the local TEA by HogsBack and Doombar from Cornwall. The Doombar was OK, but the TEA was well past its sell-by date, tasted of vineger and not nice vineger at that! When I asked for a replacement the manager made no apology for serving up out-of date beer. With only 2 beers on, how hard is it to taste it each day to make sure it's OK?

The food was OK, but they had managed to turn the countries favourite, fish and chips, into a sad pastiche of what good fish and chips is. Very little for the veggie here as well.

Don't stop, carry on to the Rd Lion by the green in Fernhurst, a much friendlier place with well kept cellar.

One caveat.
Encouraged by good reviews on this site we made a 30 mile detour with the intention of having a couple of drinks and some food Sat pm at 17.00.
We had checked the website first which advertises food available all day and there is also a notice outside which says that food is served from 12.00 to 21.00. However we were told "we don't start serving until 18.00".
0/10 for customer service and communication.

Very nice food at reasonable prices (circa £10 for mains), well kept beer and friendly landlords. It's obviously a very old building with a lot of character; my only gripe would be that the refub mentioned below somehow strips a bit of this away and makes it feel like a fairly standard pub interior that you might also find in a new build. That may just be my personal tastes though - overall remains a good option if you're in the area.
