user reviews of the George Hotel, Frome

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This is about the best bar in Frome - but then remember you are starting from a VERY low base. I accidentally spent a night in Frome (thanks to meeting someone at work who enticed me out to this small dump of a tiny market town in the middle of nowhere) and it's one of the few that doesn't leave you itching to leave. True, the bald, tatooed men sitting all day at the bar can put you off, as can the ultra loud TV playing nothing but sports in a corner of the bar. Ammusing note is the tweedle dum tweedle dee act of the realyl skinny bar maid and the one who has had a few too many MacyDs. But it's cute. It has Carling, Carling Premier, Wadworths 6X, IPA & Stella on draft. Real ale sometimes too. And, oddly, you remember those soup bowls you used to get free at Shell if you bought more than 10 gallons? They use those free bowls here to serve the condiments. Weird, but strangely in a small-town way, loveable.

Tries a bit too hard to be smart and corporate, without it quite coming off (all the scaffolding outside doesn't help). Have gone right off Waddies beer since living in Devizes and not being able to get anything else, but here they serve it reasonably enough; more of a lager and TV sport pub, really, with staff all dressed up like bank tellers. Food OK but nothing to get excited about.

This hotel, located in Frome town centre, looks upmarket from the outside and the entrance hall is promising. Turn left into the bar, and be warned by the sign which informs you that the police review the CCTV each weekend. Inside, it's not too bad (last visit on a Sunday evening), apart from a few noisy drunks, and the Wadworths 6X and Henry IPA is of reasonable quality. Bar staff looked and behaved as if they were in the depths of misery. I wonder why?
