The Gilligate is a nice unspoilt pub in which we received a very warm friendly welcome from the guy behind the bar and the pretty young barmaid. As previously reported there is a choice of two real ales. I am not a John Smith’s fan, but the Hobgoblin was excellent.

But I have to say that in the light of some of the previous reviews that we were VERY disappointed with the food. It was OK, but we have had much better quality and better value for money meals in other pubs in York and the surrounding area.

Visited for the first time yesterday.

A very friendly pub near enough to be convenient for the city centre, while being outside the walls, just far enough away not to attract all the tourist market!

The food was very good (I had the gammon) and both cask ales, John Smiths and Hobgoblin, were well kept.

Worth the visit. I will definitely go there again!
