| Large music driven pub with wooden floors and a number of alcoves to the right of the door as you enter. It’s getting a bit scruffy and could do with a spruce up. There are four handpumps on the bar but only three were on. Springhead Roaring Meg and Puritan Porter along with Everards Sunchaser. Tried a pint of the Sunchaser, it was vinegar. Took it back and it was changed with no problem once the manager had been called. The young lad behind the bar had no idea whether it was off or not. Tried the Roaring Meg instead which was fine. The staff were all very friendly and were having a laugh and joke even though I was effectively complaining. Good background music when I was in but there was obviously going to be live music on later. It’s OK, not one to go out of your way for but I didn’t think it was as bad as some of the previous reviewers. ROBCamra - 12 Jun 2009 12:34 |
| Really shocked at the bad comments - this pub's ace, the most friendly and lovely bar staff I've ever met, I went in for a quick afternoon pint and was there all night. You won't find a better atmosphere in any Brum pub, Friday & Saturdays are epically busy at the bar & the toilets aren't the best but who cares? Great venue upstairs, good choice of beer, everyone is super-friendly and you'll always hear good music downstairs or upstairs. bergi - 26 May 2009 16:44 |
| I go in from time to time to the actress for the music on a fri/sat night. What I can say is that the DJ's are fantastic and a real asset to the place. They play trendy indie and retro hits which really provides a good soundtrack to your night- they need to take more notice of requests however! However, over the last year the place has seemingly gone down hill. For one as is the general census in this thread the staff are moody kids worrying too much about whether their hats are hanging off the back of their head rather than doing their job. They're too laid back, unprofessional and unless you bite their hand off you have trouble getting served. The manager just stand there like a poser watchin the que instead of getting involved- bluddy mug! When you do finally get served (and often short changed- always check, even though it'll be even more of a mission getting through to them) you get a warm, flat beer. Now I don't mind paying £2.70 for a pint (though It's pretty steep from what I usually pay) but when you pay top dollar you don't want to be drinking out the slop bucket. It's clear they don't care about the standard of beer as the pipes need a good clean, the glasses are often dirty n not cold and they are served in the generic 'mild' fat glass in which lager was not brewed to settle. Forget a nice, cold fizzy bubble filled pint! One main issue I find with the place is that it has become a place for old people (literally the majority from between 35-65). Now, if your out and don't want to spend the evening with people the same age as your Mum then this isn't the place for you. After all, there's nothing more embarassing than drunk out of control graceless middle-aged people trying desperately to relive their youth. Really spoils the place, often making it rowdy and with leary pervs for the women! I find it drives the young-uns out- it certainly puts me off! Now, one annoying thing is the hot food trolley they have. They do pork sandwiches and hot dogs and w.e... I've never tried it but man you can smell it out of people's arses! The place fuckin' reeks of lager and dodgy food farts! That probably explains why the toilets are a mess! All in all I try to like the place, but the more I return the more I vow not to bother again. The place has bags of character and a lot of potential but - as usual- it is the people who let it down! Lazy bar staff, lazy manager drinking the profits, beer and place isn't cleaned well and bouncers are moody arseholes.. musics good on the nights I've been though.. But it's not good enough to take my mind off queing half the night for shitty, over priced beer with people having a midlife crisis trying to convince you desperately that they're cool. | Im really sad that the Sundays my wife and i have spent enjoying Danny and the boys from King Pleasure have gone. We really enjoyed the gigs which often had talented guests at the open mike sessions. Why the owners did not pursue the same formula is beyond me as the pub was packed each lunchtime, now its dead, just like its forerunner The Fiddle & Bone. I do understand the gigs were free and the talented group sort fame in more prestigious & lucrative venues. But surely the management missed the broader picture, the group was pulling in the punters. | Could do with a clean up, the toilets are really crap (pardon the pun). I was in during an early evening gig, and the music crowd were having a great time, a very friendly bunch. Others who obviously were not into the music were a sad looking bunch, I can imagine what the palce is like without muisc. the_road_goes_ever_on - 31 Jul 2008 13:47 |
