Small room in the front, big room at the back (with piano!). Washbasins: the drain goes to the urinals, excellent thinking green. Used to be so in Ship Centurion Arminius in Whitstable. B&W nude pictures in the toilets from the old days. Copper Dragon Golden Pippin @ 3.10£. Squarial on the chimney, ah the old BSB days... Hommel - 23 Jun 2012 21:36
A little gem. Lovely decor, and excellent beer. nigsy - 1 Jun 2012 08:27
Excellent pub, with excellent beer. Jazz once or twice a week. Pleasant friendly staff. This pub has been very tastefully refurbished, with the original bar, fire places (in the winter a real fire, not gas), windows, etc., etc., still in place. Thankfully there's no fruit machines, jukebox or TV. There is a little garden/yard which is over looked by the walls. I recommend a visit to this pub, its not that far off the beaten track, in fact that's an advantage. Winners of, "The Jazz Yorkshire Venue of the Year" 2010 and "York CAMRA Town Pub of the Season" 2010 also listed in CAMRA Good Beer Guide 2012. Ignore the posts 2008 and older, their way out of date. Everything has changed since then. Take a look at the website, www.thephoenixinnyork.co.uk johnjk - 13 May 2012 20:19
A refurbished although unspoiled pub, now aiming upmarket but not overly pretentious. One bar serves a number of rooms. The front room is quiet, except for the buzz of conversation; jazz music was being piped through the back rooms when I visited. A good selection of ales, all very well kept. Comfortably busy with customers of all ages on a Saturday evening. Still retains the traditional Gentlemens toilet! Well worth visiting. Islander - 13 Nov 2011 00:02
Excellent compact pub, Jon & Jenny are welcoming hosts and make you feel at home. Been in recently watching the Rugby World Cup, very early starts are made more bearable with coffee and bbq breakfasts at half time. Followed by a beer or two from the decent choice of real ales. rememberbass - 4 Oct 2011 19:36
