Great Pub, very welcoming staff, good food.
That is, if Terry, Leslie and Gary are still running the Fox, as I haven't been there for some months after being a regular for years.

Good sized pub on the main road through the village. Large car park and a garden at the side of the pub and around the back, although it’s rather shady in the evenings unfortunately. There’s a good sized bar off to the right and a cosier lounge on the left. The rear part of the lounge seems more popular with diners, and there is a nice outlook on to the garden. The couple running it seemed quite friendly.

The whole pub has got a bit of a 70’s feel to it. That’s not to say it’s shabby, it’s actually quite tidy, it’s just got that whole look to it, even down to the vinyl covered place mats and the food on the menu (e.g.; prawn cocktail and a selection of steaks). Personally I would say the food was the one thing that lets the pub down slightly. I thought a fairly basic omelette and chips nudging the £8 mark was a tad expensive, and I noticed that ham, egg & chips was a tenner, compared to the £6.50 I paid in the Stoke Inn a couple of days ago. That said, there was nothing wrong with the food, it was pleasant enough with a good choice of bar snacks, the aforementioned steaks, and a number of specials chalked up around the bar.

Drinks on this occasion were 6X, Butcombe, and rather appropriately, Exmoor Fox. Ciders were Stowford Press and Blackthorn.

Like you Quinno I too have taken beer back here that was served in very poor condition (It was Sarsons not ale!) and given the pathetic "Well nobody else has complained about it" cop out response from the landlord. Sorry, not good enough! If you wish to remain in the GBG (Don't know what got it in there in the first place, I really don't!) then buck your ideas and attitudes up and listen to your customers when they tell you something is most certainly not right!

I've said it before on here and I'll say it again - In these hard financial times businesses like this that charge top whack and serve sloppy deserve to go under if they refuse to listen to their paying public. There are always plenty of other places where the punter can and *will* spend his/her money.

Dropped in for dinner and a pint after watching the mighty Aberystwyth Town lose to Bangor City in the Welsh Cup final, after picking out of the Good Beer Guide.

I was initially pleased with what we saw - three ales on (Exmoor Stag, Otter Bitter and Bath Gem) and the menu looked decent (including a special 'we are allergy-aware' bit at the bottom which was good for Mrs Quinno, we assumed). The garden looked quite nice (though it was a bit late in the day to sit in it) and the two-room bar set-up seemed inviting.

It all started to unravel when Mrs Quinno asked if the omelette was made with milk. "It is made with milk" came the reply.

"OK - could you make it without milk?"

"It is made with milk" came back the answer. So, they are apparently aware of what is in their food as regards allergies without actually wishing to engage with it. I could understand not changing an ingredient with a more complicated meal, but an omelette...? Perhaps they have ready-made omelette mixes...which is a bit lazy, even I can cook one of those! I guess that would tally with the microwave observation below.

Ah well, food should always play second fiddle to the beer, so I thought that I might as well give all the ales a try. The first two were fine but the third was bottom of the barrel and rather murky, so I took it back. It's fair to say that my polite request for a change wasn't met with the most customer-friendly response...a rather distinct harrumphing noise. Oh dear.

And finally the pub was also freezing cold.

I really wanted to like this place, but sadly events conspired against me. I wouldn't be back again in an awful hurry.

It's OK, nothing more, nothing less. Not much atmosphere at all in the pub apart from in the main bar but if you are not a "local" then you won't get too much of a welcome in there. A local bar for local people as Tubbs would have said. :-)

Very nice outside garden areas though for good weather drinking. Not quite sure how this got into the last Good Beer Guide (prehaps they felt sorry for the area which is a bit of a dessert to say the least) but then it's never been a perfect judge of which pub to visit.
