A truly fantastic pub. Not my nearest, but I go out of my way to make it my local. The staff and landlord & lady are incredibly welcoming, the food is decent, very generous and unpretentious and, if you go there to eat with kids, they'll bend over backwards to make your visit comfortable (including offering to 'baby-sit' while you eat!). The layout and loos let it down a little (the latter in fairly immediate need of a refurb). It's a Sky Sports / football pub, but I've never found it too intrusive - unless there's a big game on. If there is a big match on the layout doesn't make for ideal viewing, but the atmosphere is great. Not trendy, not pretentious, not quaint or fussy, but in my view the closest you'll get to a perfect family pub. saintpump - 29 Dec 2009 11:57
Been here a couple of times, but unless you enjoy stomach-ache enjoying lumpy, cloudy Harveys I wouldn't recommend it. Though it's probably ok if you're on the lagers. notters - 4 Sep 2009 15:10
This was my first local when i moved to Brighton from Eastbourne many moons ago. On my first visit to the Montpelier i felt so welcome by the landlord (Jeff) that it felt like i had been drinking in there for years. charliebigchips - 15 May 2007 14:57
Much improved by Jeff in recent times. Good friendly staff, great Sunday lunches. Still football friendly too. nrobinson - 10 Mar 2007 18:29
Very busy on footy night so avoid if its not your game. Apart from that its nothing special and yes the gents pee troths are high on the wall. TheWizard - 12 Jul 2006 17:39
