One of the better pubs in Alton and after the departure of Helen and Nigel a few years back has regained a lot of its trade it lost following them leaving. Food a bit pricey but good standard and plenty of choice of beers to suit most tastes. Bar staff friendly and helpful but if only same could be said of the landlady. Stern, morose and unsmiling countenance is very offputting and gives the impression she would sooner be elsewhere. Cheer up ducks it may never happen or maybe it has! goutbuster - 5 Sep 2011 15:25
Historic pub on the outskirts of Alton. Nice surroundings and have a coal fire during the winter. Food served throughout the day and the interior whilst modern does have a traditional feel to it. Visited there on a Sunday evening and surprisingly found it quite busy which is always a good sign. There were 6 ales from which to choose from so I decided to opt for the Alton Pride (£3.10) that was nicely kept. They have previously been listed in the Good Beer Guide. 8/10. wezmiester - 22 Jun 2011 17:29
Recently went to the French Horn as a Hampshire tourist - noted as a good pub near Jane Austen's house in Chawton. The food was ok - your usual pub fare. Service was poor. Sat down at 13.30. Order main course at 14.00. Complained at 14.30. Food turned up at 14.45. It wasn't even very busy. If you are visiting Jane Austen's house and looking for a lunch venue, there is a lovely tea shop and pub the Greyfriars directly opposite the house. Both are much closer, prettier with friendly prompt staff. Unless you need to be in Alton and just looking for a very average pub with poor service I'd give the French Horn a miss. marble12 - 30 Jul 2010 20:52
