A very mixed pub experience. The best known of the central York 'free on entry' music pubs, and some of the bands are excellent. see http://blueflies.fotopic.net/c688647.html and

John Smiths Cask beer is as ordinary as it is anywhere. Since going no smoking (private yard to the side available) the carpet has been renewed and this makes a considerable difference! Very very busy especially at weekends with tourist meals at midday and considerable drifting in and out of numerous people all evening. But a very strong local clientelle, some coming in as three generations of a family.
The baths are a novelty - (and genuine!). Great to think of people enjoying themselves on this spot for 1800 years.

The "entertainment" is slightly better than the beer. Avoid.

Looks ok outside, interesting view of the roman remains under glass at your feet. I felt very uncomfortable in there, as though I was totally unwanted. Very sinister. I hope it's changed recently

Went in on a Friday night, had a live covers band which created a good atmosphere. Fairly small pub, looking a bit grotty but good for a swift half!
