| Better on the inside than it appears from the outside. A few beers on offer. Went for the Urban bitter which was pleasant enough. The bar area very much a blokes watching the footy kind of place and felt pretty pub (as opposed to trendy bar) like. Worth a visit if in the vicinity. Snarling_Mallard - 28 Dec 2009 12:32 |
| Trendy UAB place that is nevertheless still a pub and does good ale. A bar room and a long, opened out rear lounge (accessed by a side corridor) are served by a central bar, which I presume was always the pub's layout. However the ambience is very modern, with lots of modern art, plasma screens (it's good for sport) and other kitsch stuff thrown in, particulary in the back. The bar has the same but to a lesser degree and is more pubby. Good to see a place busy on a Saturday afternoon though, and there did seem to be regulars as opposed to this being a circuit place. Wye Valley HPA was good on my visit and at £2.25 was cheap for this kind of place. The two other ales available were UAB's own brews which looked rather garish so I didn't try. Batham's must've run out again! It's not bad at all really but a bit modern for my tastes, and I prefer it's sister pub the Red Lion around the corner, which has a more traditional ambience. i'd definitely call in again though. | The Lord Clifden is a great pub. The only problem is that it keeps running out of Bathams! The Lord Clifden also sells Tastees, the best snack ever. blackandamber - 17 Nov 2009 22:40 |
| Returning to the Lord Clifden again, it was typically busy on a Saturday night (with an increasingly young clientèle) and indeed hard to find a seat anywhere. We were disappointed to find no evidence of the 'brew pub' rumoured to be being set up, with Wye Valley HPA and Bathams Bitter being the only real ale choices available then. The HPA is already quite widely available in Birmingham City Centre's modest array of Real Ale pubs, and we felt something slightly more adventurous would have been nice. As regards the Bathams, this was of only average quality, well below what we are used to drinking elsewhere. I know that this will be a contentious point, as it has been mentioned here before that the landlord prides himself on the quality of the Bathams Bitter. Well, it simply is not anywhere near the quality to be found closer to its Black Country roots. We drink it every one to two weeks over there, and have never found the Lord Clifden to keep it especially well. It's OK, and far better than the nearby dreadful Church Inn used to keep it, but it will disappoint those who have drunk it elsewhere. Anyone doubting this claim should head for the Great Western (under Wolverhampton Station) or The Britannia (in Upper Gornal), which will settle the matter once and for all. So overall, still a pub we like but needing to keep its eye on beer range & quality whilst riding the wave of it success as an urban art pub. Roy22 - 28 Oct 2009 18:54 |
| I visited yesterday with 3 friends before the Moseley match and can safely say it's the best pub we've been in before ANY Rugby match we've travelled to. Wye Valley HPA and Bathams Best are always on we were informed by Liam, the friendly and attentive Barman as well as 2 Guests which were Holdens Golden Glow and Skinners St. Pirans. Each of the 4 Ales on offer were of the highest order with HPA marginally the best. For other drinkers there are numerous bottles and Lagers inc. Peroni on Tap. We ate here as well as the Menu was varied & inviting. We weren't disappointed as HUGE portions arrived in good time AND ALL COOKED FROM FRESH!! All meals were VERY tasty indeed. Fantastic place. What more can I say - 10/10 dotball - 11 Oct 2009 13:21 |
