pangolin, "The decoration doesn't work" is an unusual comment from someone with your experience !! In my simple opinion, a good all round pub that caters for most tastes which includes better than average smoking facilities, cleanliness, quality of ales, good garden etc..etc...etc.. It may be a little pricey by local standards but.....you get a lot more for your money. 8/10

Ah, the age-old debates about The Vine, Tarring. Older customers will remember how the pub was before it's relatively recent refurb and change of management. Firstly, although the new decoration feels a bit too cold and modern, it is good to see investment in the pub. The clients have also changed; from the 'old lags' (some of whom defected to The George and Dragon)to a perhaps younger client base of students and the occasional shaven-headed builder blocking the bar. The prices also feel a bit expensive for Worthing, and there seems to be regularly changing bar staff. That said, The Vine remains a historic and generally friendly pub, with a good variety of beers. Worth a try.

The decoration doesn't work somehow and doesn't really make for a good atmosphere. Tried too hard? Still, smarter than average and food tasty if not exceptional.

Trying to get back to its glory days. A younger (compared to before) crowd now use this place and given it a bit of life. Well worth a visit. A big garden round the back.

Sorry, forgot to add in my previous review, this pub also has a huge garden, additional outside (clean) toilets, children are banned from the bar and a top-of-the-range electric heating/lighting/canopy sustem over one of its outside good quality wood tables and safe visable parking for bicycles at the rear of the pub. In other words, someone has spent a bit of dosh to make it more than just a brackish watering hole with a television as many pubs seem to be nowdays!!
