You certainly, until recently needed to be wearing head to toe Burberry just to get through the door. More tucked into socks Primark jogging pants than you could shake a dead hampster at. Been in last week and believe I may have seen a whiff of improvement. Clientele seemed marginally less chavvy. We'll always need this type of pub, cheap booze and an air of out of control about it but if it, also under new management is improving then we'll give it a go. The_Man - 29 Apr 2007 22:37
I`m going to say something rather shocking: I`d actually go to this WEATHERSPOONS pub out of choice and on a regular basis. I know, I feel slightly shaky as well. Seriously though, of the four weatherspoons in Norwich (the others being the passable Bell, the soulless Glasshouse and the crap Lloyds) the Citygate is not only the best of the bunch, but also probably one of the most attractive outlets in the whole franchise. Rather unsurprisingly this is primarily because it doesn’t really feel totally like a Weatherspoons, for two reasons. Firstly, its location on the edge of the city centre means that it isnt dominated by the usual spoons clientele of unhinged teenage slappers and paroled footie hooligans, as they naturally seem to be drawn to the other spoons branches in the centre of town. Maybe it’s something to do with the concentrated scent of cheap booze offers and panda cars, I don’t know. Secondly, the Citygate building, converted I believe from an old cinema, has a lot of character owing to its high ceilings, wide floor space and the absence of the usual spoons attempts to force the pub either to be a mock oldie pub (cue random black and white photos on the wall) or a soulless wanky bar. Of course the pub cant totally escape from its owners worse characteristics – you still get your fair share of suspiciously young muppet townies downing Snakebites at the weekends and the drink selection is typically poor and restricted. But its certainly not bad and if youre around Derenham road its worth popping in for at least one. 7/10 pgazz - 31 Mar 2005 19:29
This place has good points and bad points, very cheap bear with a small (but perfectly formed) selection of ales - a great start pub for a night out. Unfortunately there's sometimes not much atmosphere and the food that is served is hit and miss. However the bar staff are always friendly and this was my local for about 2 years so really go there and have a peak if you're in Norwich. Oh, and they also have nice cocktails in jugs to get you in the mood - hurrah! John - 23 Jul 2004 21:00
