With pubs all around closing at a rapid rate, many a wannabe commentator is readily giving they’re opinion as to why. Smoking bans, rising prices and a possible change in our social habits are all reasons given on a regular basis. One factor, however, is often overlooked – and that is this: Establishments often close for one simple reason. They are not worth going to. A key contender for that most unwanted of mantles must surely go to The Lord Homesdale. Situated in a residential area, it was probably at one time, a key meeting place for the locals – a place where they would gather, drink and regale tales. Today, it is none of those things. It is, sadly, like many pubs visited by this reviewer, completely void of redeeming features. No ales, no character, no inspiration and no sense of the past. It is just a complete shambles. White painted walls, pine flooring, a jukebox, a pool table and two plasma screens. That is, your lot unfortunately. My visit was on a Sunday afternoon and once the football was over, every single patron, other than yours truly, cleared off. That, sadly, sums up the scenario. Perhaps they all felt it was time to leave, but I think a more accurate assumption would be that they weren’t given a reason to stay. HTM69 - 12 Sep 2008 00:20
The Lord Homesdale has only recently been refurbished and from he outside it looks like quite a lot of money has been spent on it. They probably did this to coincide with the opening of the new Tesco store opposite. i must admit i haven't had the guts to go in yet but i am tempted. i have scary visions of everyone of the locals turning round and looking at me like i am an alien from out of space so this is a key reason why i want to try it (i am not an alien by the way). i will have to round up my usual drinking associate and bravely sample this apparent 'Locals only club' i am sure the new Tesco has brought in some new faces and well designed board outside says 'now serving food' so perhaps the place has changed. Give it a go. TheDaleks - 22 Jun 2008 12:12
A bit of a crud hole although I have to say that st georges flag has no connotations ith the nf - its the nation flag and it is a good thing that some pubs still are still patriotic amylondon - 10 Mar 2008 21:51
Unfortunately, it appears to be just a temporary closure for refurbishment. It would be better and cheaper to just burn the place down. Arthurguinness - 6 Mar 2008 11:06
