ESB, Palmers200, Flowerpots Goodens Gold, Oakleak Holehearted, fff Moondance, Fullers Discovery, Bowman Swift One, Chesil (Dorset Brewing Co) had gone. A good list, although just one darker beer present and that (the Palmers) was on its way out – this led to an unfortunate exchange, when it was politely returned, whereby the guvnor rolled his eyes and asked my mate if we were camra (we’re not, although we should be, but that’s not the point) – in what is obviously a proper real ale pub one would expect an off beer to be changed with rather more grace than that. To be fair, he did then change it and immediately turned the pump clip. Single room community local with overly busy carpet, regular pub furniture, dartboard above corner table. Overall a pleasant backstreet local with good beer choice, but one of the company less enamoured with his visit.

Now replaced the keg Honeydew with another cask beer. Also stock bottles of Maredsous.

Fullers ESB & Discovery, 1648 Bee-Head & Triple Champion, Altons Pride, Bowmans Swift One and Irving Type 42.

As good as ever.

I came in for the quiz night last week and was quite surprised, nicely surprised. It is all free and we ended up with 2 rounds of shots, tshirts, bottle openers, hip flasks, usb sticks. And we won and got 2 bottles of wine and a poker set. WOW comes to mind. I don't think i will miss anymore thats for sure. Also they are giving away free tickets to global gathering which will end my festival season quite nicely.

Great Pub. Went to try their homemade burger, wow now that was an experience. My partner had the special on, lamb and mint burger, with real mint sauce. It was a lovely meal and will be sure to mention this gem to all my friends. Oh and we ate in the huge beer garden they had, even had music out there, i love this pub.

Never been to this pub till the other night (Saturday), had a leaving do with some mates who drink there all the time. Impressed! Can't remember the last time I was able to enjoy myself as much in a PUB. Being served without waiting for ages was refreshing, even tho it seemed like they were packed. As a smoker, the huge beer garden is perfect. The juke box is piped out there and the bbq was still goin when we left about half 10. Great night. Be back for sure.

This is a pub to visit if you're hungry!

On a busy Saturday when the rest of Southampton is jam packed with shoppers, take a moment to disapear into the Red Lion.

The beer is good, local too. The scenary is amazing (you have to see it to believe it) and the food, well, it'll set you up for the day and probably the next as well.

It can be quiet (sometimes a blessing), the barman can be surley, but the venue and food quite make up for this.

Lovely period public house, the food was plentiful fresh and pleasant and the beer spot on!
4 May 2008 22:19
Although the beer was not the best, this is def worth a trip. The pub goes back to the 15th century, maybe earlier and is well amazing to look up at the beams in the back, you really get a feel of what it must've been like years ago, nothing has changed in here, quite spectacular. I bet its a matter of time before some london speculator, local jewry or venture capitalist gets his filthy hands on this place and makes it into a restaurant or something. as it is, its shit, but its original well-old shit. top stuff.

Called in here on a wonder round local pubs ended up stopping for a few, nice enviroment and surroundings not as pretentious as the bars round this area.

I came to Southampton to visit my disabled pal and came in here on Saturday. Its tonnes better than the other pubs on the road, and the age of people is good, most in mid to late 20's, early 30's.

Beer ain't great although there was a couple of cask options, I didn't like the look and opted for a few Desperado's and sank some brandy at the bar (warning it was not Martell but that Courvoisier shite).

My big footed pal did manage to crack onto some Irish sl*gs but didn't get his oats so was a bit of a waste of time. Nevertheless the peope in here are sound.

Good atmosphere, good ales, no chavs, one of the best pub in Southampton

very hit and miss, had some amazing ales in there before, recently some shockers and clearly the staff don't have a clue how to actually poor a pint or look after the beer properly. Food waiting time can sometimes be a long time

Standard Wetherspoons. Ringwood beers plus Pedigree, Abbot and some more Itchen Valley/Hampshire Brewery beers.

Old Thumper was nice enough tonight.

Good service, good food, good drinks offers. I love this Wetherspoons! Very popular with students but a great place to hang out. Is nice in the summer to sit on the roof and watch the world go by.

Great place for a fight with the dole funded pond life from the St Mary's flats.Nice queue of alcoholics just before opening.
15 Jun 2008 15:29
I never get a decent ale in this pub, they don't know how to look after ale. I now go to the Giddy Bridge up the other end of town, slightly better, the clientelle is a little more respectible and you don't have to sit in front of two 70 year olds going at it hammer and tong. Having said that the food is reasonable and waiting time is pretty good, just don't go there looking for a decent pint.
14 Apr 2008 20:16
A good starting place for a night out but is so overshadowed by The Giddy Bridge (another Wetherspoons) which offers the same offers.

What is the significance of the Wodehouse-inspired name of this pub? Anyone know how long it has been thus-called?
18 Feb 2008 16:07
This pub is a wonderful find, you are pleasantly greeted on arrival and wished well on departure.

Being a vegetarian, the choices are great but if there is nothing on the menu that appeals, the chef will discuss alternatives and accommodate.

All the staff are helpful and cheerful and we have never had a bad experience whilst visiting.
18 Feb 2008 15:58
Paid 25 pounds for a 3 course meal that included being told to hurry up 6 times by serving staff as the kitchen closes in 30 minutes, each course served immediately after each other including desert with coffees.
The turkey in the meal was very tasteless and perfectly round so obviously partially manufactured.

Poor service - low quality food - very disappointed !!!

Reviews by BITE users:

Lovely view & nice hanging baskets outside but that's about the only positive thing you can say about this pub. Service was dreadful & I ended up with a dirty glass -not nice to have someone else's lipstick on your glass. Food looked OK but they've obviously had complaints about their chips. The menu says you'll get "hand cut chips" with the fish & chips but what you actually get is frozen McDonalds-style oven chips - not exactly hand cut. There was a disclaimer on the bar that they aren't actually hand cut 'cos they've had a problem with the hand cutting machine!!! Apparently it used to be a lovely pub, it's got a long way to go to get back to that sort of description.

Lovely setting and a lovely looking pub exterior.Inside the pub is of the soulless corporate variety. The service is absolutely atrocious - VERY slow and incompetent. Food is okay, but expensive(£10 - £15 for standard pub dishes). Beer is generally well kept(Hall & Woodhouse) if you don't mind waiting 10 minutes to be served.
6 Jul 2008 13:36
Very busy pub, with pleasant young staff who on our latest visit were struggling to cope with problems that were not of their making. There was only one person behind the bar (on a Sunday lunchtime!) and the queue stretched right across the pub. They ran out of all but one real ale. And the computer crashed (funny how pubs always used to function without a computer). We ordered drinks from our table and they took 25 minutes to arrive -- came after the food. The meals are not cheap, but on the whole they are well prepared -- though it's a shame they don't use proper risotto rice in the risotto. Best to sit outside if the weather's up to it.

This is a very varied and great pub catering for everybody. It is nonsense to say football is on all the time in every bat (would be difficult - no TV in one of them) and the back bar leading onto the gatrden (overlooking the water) is lovely. Yes there are some roughish customers but only a small proportion - and they are no trouble in practice. The locals won the Radio Hampshire quiz 2008 - well done us!!

Give it a try for heaven's sake - whatever your type of pub you'll find a bar to suit you here.

Woolston, Sholing and Netley Railway Stations in Hythe's Pub Details are a long swim on a cold night.
3 Feb 2008 22:04
This was a cracking little pub, but spoilt by the "Harvester" type bar tacked onto the end, and the owners obsession with football. If you like football on 24hrs of the day, on 5 different screens, in EVERY bar, then its the pub for you. I remember a very different Nelson when it was a proper locals pub, sadly that is no longer the case.

I agree with the comments on poor service and price. I was invited to a group booking, at 7.30pm. The starter eventually turned up at 9.10pm!! There was only two staff on to serve, and they were delivering main courses before some people got their starters. We had to pre-order our meals weeks in advance, but on the night was told they'd run out of my choice and I had to change. Not impressed. The food was nice but service so abysmal I won't be returning.
27 Jul 2008 20:20
I can not believe the last couple of reviews because they have obviously been going to a different pub than I have. The food is fantastic and very well priced, the service is great, wonderful atmosphere and a friendly welcome. I thouroughly recommend a visit to this establishment. Never had a bad night out. Thankyou Bold Forester.
17 Mar 2008 10:16
The last review was the most accurate, really indifferent
food, very overpriced, really slow and sullen service. We waited 45 minutes for our meal, it really was not worth it. Bizarrely, this pub is always busy, but I don't understand why! The Landlord and his wife really are miserable and inhospitable (except to their cronies).
We went there against my better judgement as we had a bad experience there last time, but thought we'd give it another try. Bad call, we should have gone to the Talisman, it's always very nice there!

Not bad, typical chain style but the beers reasonable. Food is cheap but nothing special, look for the independant pubs for better food.

The pudding challenge involves eating a pudding and not throwing up within 30 minutes.
So far no one has succeeded.
23 Jan 2008 17:37
I love it here. Great service. quite a local pub but being a hungry horse there is cheap food and you cant leave without trying the pudding challenge.
