First visit since the fire and the subsequent re-furnishment. I think they have done a good job - it is bright and airy but still retains the old drinking areas. Purists may disagree but I was impressed. The main thing is that Greene King have given the licensees freedom to choose locla beers as well as GK products so the beer range has improved immensely. They had ales from Bowmans; Milk Street and Oakleaf and they will change on a regular basis. Staff were very friendly and we heard all about the comings-and-goings of other local pubs! They are having a "Meet the Brewer" night soon so there should be some goodies to be had!! Beer prices were reasonable and cheaper than some other pubs in the area !! Well worth a visit for the beer alone.

Kind of half eating area and half pub. Plenty of ales on and the ones I sculled were all good.

Now open, 8 real ales and a complete restoration. Good to have it back

Small single-room backstreet pub that seems popular with Southampton fans on matchdays. The beer selection is good and reasonably priced. Yesterday's selection was Fullers ESB, Flowerpots Goodens Gold & Perridge Pale, Dark Star American Pale Ale & Hophead Galaxy, Flack Manor Black Jack, Salisbury English Ale & Alfred's Saxon Bronze. They have a large selection of rolls for £1 each and an interesting selection of books on one wall. I've often seen the high rating on this site and looked forward to visiting. It's certainly worthy of a visit. But we did prefer the South Western.

Very good range of ales, cheap prices, good little pub, but too small, does get very busy quite easily and almost feels like someone's front room at times!

Great little boozer featuring local ales at very fair prices - and they have rolls available during most of the afternoon. It was being painted when we went so the outside will now look a bit brighter. We had good service and were offered tasters of beers we had not drunk before. As I have said before - this is exactly what a good boozer should be. Don't miss it.

Another wonderful pub in Southampton, a decent community spirit and nice locals frequent the pub, Lisa the barmaid was excellent and clearly enjoyed her job. The Hop Back beers were on top form, a lovely conservatory and a tidy garden area with gravel and a few benches. Inside the pub is very clean Indeed. The Wellington is four minutes walk away and probably a similar distance to the Key and Anchor, probably one of the best three pubs so close together anywhere. 10/10, no other score would do.

New licensee has really turned this pub around. Great range of well kept beer.

Best of 9 pubs we sampled in Southampton yesterday. It's well located next to St Denys station. But I believe trains only stop here once an hour. The interior seems more reminiscent of a wild western saloon. Two dogs were busily chasing one another around the room and wrestling with one another. If there had been a cockfight in the middle of the bar, I doubt anybody would have raised an eyelid. The beer selection is good. Yesterday, it was Cottage Golden Arrow, Hobdens Wessex Weasel, Sunny Republic Beach Blonde, Island Wight Gold, Itchen Valley Russian Winter, Triple fff Moondance, Ringwood Old Thumper & Downton Quadhop. The cider was Old Rosie. Definitely recommended. Whilst here, you might as well try the Dolphin across the railway footbridge. We did!

Beer was good but as has been said a bit pricey (I heard about the "hike" in beer prices when the Junction closed but that was only pub gossip so perhaps somebody can confirm/deny?) 3.50 for a pint of Swift One sounds a lot but it is probably the going rate in many pubs in my area (Thames Vallley) Anyway, I think the SWA is a bit tired and the old Alehouse theme is a bit old hat now (no - I don't want it changed into a bistro/gastro venue bar but perhaps a change of decor?) Anyway we will use it again as the range is quite good and it is so handy for the station.

This is a great pub with great beer. However, it has recently become VERY expensive with the cheapest pint (Swift One) at 3.50 and others at 3.60 or 3.70. This is 80 or 90p more expensive than the Guide Dog. I think they may lose a lot of custom when the Junction reopens at the end of the month.

Another busy pub with a decent selection of ales and spirits. It seemed to be doing a roaring trade in food, with all tables taken. There are many intriguing burgers on the menu with strange combinations. They were certainly large but a little pricey. Popular with Saints fans on a matchday. Beers on were Hopback New Year's Ale, Oakleaf Nuptu'Ale & Hole Hearted, Flack Manor Black Jack, Rolling Rock Stone, Suthwick Old Dick & Irving Wee Malc's. Surprised this hasn't been in the Good Beer Guide since 2006. Can easily be combined with a visit to the Guide Dog and I'm giving it the same score.

Excellent range of ales, better range than the Guide Dog in my opinion. Large pub, with some outdoor seating, nice old charachter pub, the new owners have done a great job on it. However, it isn't cheap, particulalry for food and is another one of those pubs that has a dog running around where customers are trying to eat which isn't really needed! Nevertheless a very good pub.

Now under new ownership and called the Rockstone. Excellent range of ales including Andwell Mild and Porter. Pricey(3.20 - 3.40) compared with the nearby(excellent) Guide Dog but I believe it cost a fortune to renovate the place so forgivible. Friendly welcome and the food looked good, although I didn't try any. Probably the best this pub has been in years and well worth a look.

brilliant little pub! i recomend anyone come here if your looking for a good laugh and a really chilled out atmosphere. bar staff are friendly and not short of a bit of banter.
food was good i had BBQ ribs chips and salad and my plate was over flowing with what i thought was scrummy pub grub. you can tell the pub is still gping through a big refurbishment and they were saying about a play area and festivals going up in the top field which is great for families.

what a great little local gem :D brilliant night
