The Ordinary is over £3 a pint,in good condition on a recent visit, although too cold for my taste.
The main problem I have with this pub is the cheap and nasty high backed black plastic seating which completely dominates and clutters the interior.
The recent sympathetic refurbishment at the nearby Builders Arms shows what can be done and their Ordinary is considerably cheaper.

We went in this pub after a chance meeting with an old friend.
What a wonderful place it is - we sat in the garden (had 3 children and the dog with us - who are apparently all welcome inside too).
Sitting in glorious sunshine in the garden, good beer, a jug of Pimms, the kids playing happily, scoffing free cherries from the cherry tree - absolute paradise.
The charming landlord even brought out some steps so the kids could pick more cherries.

We will definitely be back.
In the bad old days it used to be a locals only type outlet- not too hostile but cliquey - now a very warm friendly modern style of place.
Usually drink in the Adelaide - which is good too. Youngs (aka Charles Wells) could learn from Shepherd Neame on how to look after their pubs a bit better decor wise.

My colleagues and me love this pub again - if only they did pizzas like at the Hogarth. We Did have some of their panninis which were excellent.

New regime is good for the place - I like Mark, Nina and Tamsyn + the funny Yugoslav guy.

As promised, made a return to the Lion on Saturday to check out the beer festival thing.had some mates along this time and all agreed that it was a top night. Staff were all first rate and the atmosphere was well 'holiday' I suppose. we even got round some of the real ales (anyone fancy putting on a lagerfest)! Seriously though people of Teddington, you have something to roar about in the Lion. Proper local, well done.

To set the facts straight about Teddy_Boy's 'aka': my name is David, I live in the road behind the pub and I'm not a pseudonym for John the landlord. However, I want the pub to do well (as, I am sure, does Teddy_Boy)and am happy to read that people are enthusiastic about the festival. A word to the wise - try to get there on Saturday if you want to have the choice of the full range of beers, since in previous years quite a few barrels have been empty by Saturday night. Cheers!

i've recently discovered the Lion, and have to say it's ticked all the boxes for me. although we didnt take part in the quiz it sounded good and the atmosphere was just right.I'm far from local but will be making return visits food great and the LAGER well kept

Reviews by BITE users:

This pub is a bit of a paradox - for years I would travel past before I noticed it and even then it looked shut most of time. Whilst there's no denying that a refurb was needed, especially if it wanted to attract the new more affluent clientelle that was moving into the area, but I can't say its proved much of a success: removing the ornate surround above the bar was a mistake, painting the walls and ceiling pure white has made it too stark, and yet the one thing that really did need to go - the dodgy 70's gas fire - still remains!

Still, its a small price to pay for the decent selection of regularly changing real ales but the real attraction has to be the farmhouse scrumpy or cider that is often available.

The Thai restaurant is a nice touch, although the last dish I had was WAY too hot.
4 Jun 2008 00:41
I had a very quick half in here this afternoon before rushing back to work. Just looking at what was on offer at the bar (most of which I’d never heard of) I could see why so many on here think that this place is the nuts.
I noticed some bar billiards at the back of the pub, which I find great fun and haven’t seen anywhere for ages. I’m not sure about ‘King of the Hill’ playing at full volume on the television though.

I think that I’ll reserve judgement on this place and try to arrange an evening visit with some of my ale connoisseur friends.

I have to say, we have a madman in our midst: Jeweller John - Slags off The Beehive several times, and then he says..And I qoute: ' Great beer and food-well worth a visit!' Maybe a touch of memory loss there John, or is the old alkie-symers kicking in? The Beehive might not be up to much, but it most definitely does not deserve the rude, nasty comments that this person seems to be posting. Same goes for The Magpie, which has recently undergone extensive re-decoration, and is a very pleasant pub to be in, and the Thai home-cooked food is delicious. Steve the Landlord has his moments ( don't we all ) - But the beer and cellar are in 1st class condition, as is the public bar, & there are an excellent range of ever-changing real ales to satisfy the thirsty punter, not forgetting the wonderful selection of imported lagers and Fruli fruit beer. Need I say more..

My promised revisit following my mistaken trip on the day of the RU club final,Doh! What a contrast, busy, lively and chatty with drinkers spilling out into the street outside. A mixed clientelle all seemingly enjoying good beer and conversation.
Hall & Woodhouse Badger, Tanglefoot, K&B Sussex, and seasonal Fursty Ferret. A great town pub.
19 Jul 2008 09:52
Lovely genuine pub. The manager's a really nice pleasant guy and the Hoffbrau lager and Dorset beers are spot-on. Quiet place to have a natter and it's on the most pleasant street in Twickers. I'm off there after work to welcome in the weekend!!

Reviews by BITE users:

This pub is in a wonderful location – almost unrivalled for riverside drinking. I tend to hire a rowing boat half a mile downstream and row there for a couple of beers. I can’t say I’ve noticed that it is so much more expensive than other boozers in/near London. Comments about it being a toff’s bar are well off the mark – all humanity gathers there, especially on a hot day.

I would agree that quality of the pub management has declined since the old landlord moved to The Clubhouse up the road. I think they tried for a more chilled atmosphere to pull in the under 30s, but the service and catering went downhill.

The gents’ toilet should have some sort of heritage order slapped on it. I can’t think of a more disgusting bog anywhere. If you have seen the film Trainspotting, there is a scene which is captioned “the worst toilet in Scotland”. It could have been shot in the Swan.

Despite these shortcomings it is still worth a visit.

7 May 2008 15:12
Ive been going to this pub for 15years and the pub just keeps getting better and friendlier so all the people below are the type of people that just go there once a year the management and his team are allways friendly and smiling so if you dont like it there then maybe the sorting room would be more your style.

P.S keep the good job going guys.
30 Apr 2008 12:29
Exceptional pub ruined by the complete bunch of spanners that are the manager and his mates.

Such a shame,

P.S. A regular cheese and tomato white bun roll will set you back £2.50........

Reviews by BITE users:

This is not my local (That would be the shady Milford) but I did like the beer (DaisyCutter was exceptionally fresh and tasty) plus they do try to be a bit wider than your standard "Largar" drinks with Leffe and Fruilli plus several ales. I have found the "local cronies" rather agreeable - if you ask nicely they will let you see the pumps, it's not difficult. I used English - it works sometimes. Isleworth has it's salty characters but they tend to drink in the Bridge, The Milford or the Coach & Horses near Hounslow end of London Road. Live music adds to the atmosphere although rather too many accoustic blues acts for my liking...
21 Jun 2008 19:04
You know the scene. You fancy a beer and you want to see what's on offer. But you can't because a load of local cronies (there's more descriptive words i could use) have monopolised the the bar. Do they shift to let you have a peep? Do they b*ll*cks!
20 Jun 2008 17:05
Sought this pub put after it came out in the top 50 pubs in London in Time Out a few years back. Glad I did as it has become our not so local local. Aside from the wide and changing selection of real ales always on offer it is a real community pub with a local amateur theatre group.
Had been in need of a bit of TLC in recent years. Mercifully the reburb has been symathetic (aside formthe suspect baby boy blue ceiling in the lounge bar).
Attactive beer garden except when Heathrow inbound flight are directly overhead - they're so load you have to pause your conversations whilst they fly over.
The two annual beer festivals are worth attending.

I'm sorry to replicate here BUT I do need to comment on this NONSENSE:

"the pub is not going to be in the next Good Beer Guide. Not a beer issue, but a lack of nominations by CAMRA members. I expect it will make an immediate return"

Firs & foremost- who cares? The GBG does not guarantee good beer. It is simply a narrow snapshot in time.

Secondly: NOT a beer issue? Wake, and smell the fulfilment of life, my friend.

Finally, Inclusion in the guide has absolutely NOTHING to do with what punters say. Its criteria is based SOLELY on an individual visit (may a follow up, as well).

Per what has been said before, ensure you know the reality PRIOR to posting silly fictional comments based on your belief and NOT FRAILTY.

Pub has been declined an entry in the GBG based on what is serves - not what you say
31 Aug 2008 01:49
mozzer1 may not like what people say. So what? Providing it is factual, nothing wrong with critique. I cannot comment on other houses but can confirm the gist of what mrshaw says is correct. Have drunk here for many years, less so recently. The Carpenters are accused of theft and buying goods from unauthorised distributors (as under the counter transactions). Nothing new, I suppose they did this as the previous hostelry.

I have always felt that neither of them were ever cut out for this type of work. He is lazy and, generally incapable. She is rude, arrogant and abusive. I, along with at least 6 others I discussed issue with today, hope their appeal is unsuccessful and that they are outsed onto the pavement ASAP.

This is a business. Leaseholder (Grant Lewis) cannot afford the massive losses he was sustaining due to theft.

I had a very pleasant drink in the LOH yesterday late afternoon / early evening. Just like old times - civilized atmosphere - people chatting and laughing, and absolutely no intrusive music and no swearing.

Here is the latest state of things as I understand them:
- Ken is back! Concentrating on cellar/bar work.
- the chef will be working full time in the immediate future.
- the Carpenters are still resident upstairs while their appeal is in progress. They are taking no part in the running of the pub.
- the pub is not going to be in the next Good Beer Guide. Not a beer issue, but a lack of nominations by CAMRA members. I expect it will make an immediate return.
- sadly, the Siberian Chipmunks have all died, apparently from some sort of illness.

mikem and the_inspector appear to be the only recent and genuine reviewers who has commented on other pubs. The rest are all single entries by several usernames ! Is this another case of Multiple Personality Disorder by one or two individuals ? On the other hand, it also looks like a low budget advertising campaign or, just a lot of nasty minded people who will moan about anything. No rating left.
11 Aug 2008 09:32
Ok guys, give the guys a break here!! Being a previous employee for the pub I know how hard it can be working here. Yes sometimes it can be hectic and you will find flaws with the staff, food and beer that doesn't make everyone happy, but then again which pub in London has an 100% record on that??? Some of the complaints and whinging on here is understandable and some of it is completely bloody pointless!! I enjoyed my time working at this pub and kick myself at times that I transferred elsewhere but the regulars and the staff at the time were the most welcoming in my time that I was there. Who now runs the pub? Is it still Tom? And boys that drink ther like ESB Steve and co still go there?

Reading DPARTRID's comment about Patrick leaving, I have to agree with the comments made by him/her and piano_man. I feel that Patrick is only half way through the job - managed to get rid of the unpleasantness that was inherited but hasn't had a chance to rebuild. Will be a great shame if he is relocated - who takes over? Good cook that he is, Artur is no 'front man' so I guess that means yet another manager for the place - can't be a good thing.
4 Jun 2008 11:59
Just read previous comment. Whilst I haven't been in the pub for a while, I agree Patrick and Artur make this place special and they really looked after myself, the wife and kids. I reckon they should be allowed to carry on doing what they do best here and not moved on somewhere else. I hate pubs where the staff are constantly changing, hardly conducive to a good local.

Reviews by BITE users:

You say the new man runs a tight ship and that the Adelaide is all the better for it? Well I will just have to respect that. All I can say is that on the one occasion I visited since he took over his behaviour was completely unacceptable. You do not smack patrons in the back of the head. You can cut them off or you can ask them to leave (neither of which I believe would've been appopriate as the chap wasn't alone in berating the ref) but you do not hit them.
25 Jun 2008 14:30
couldn't disagree with froosh more, the adelaide is a great pub since Dermot took control, he takes no messing, which is as it should be, and keeps a great clean and friendly house, anyone remember the place before he took over? it was bloody terrible.
20 Jun 2008 18:04
I disagree strongly with the previous poster - it is because Dermot is strict and attentive that this place is as good as it is.
Good landlords should treat the bar as their "other" living room and not allow rowdy behaviour.

For the first time in years I will be drinking in the Queen Dowager as well now - especially if I have the kids(See my other post).

The food is good if unexciting, the place is spotless and the Masterbrew and Spitfire always in top condition.

Made my two yearly visit (well - ok - a bit more frequent than that) the other week. Was delighted by absence of Badger beers. Too much Sharpe's for my liking but, aside from Youngs Ordianire, there was Hepworths Sussex and a Bateman's seasonal. Really excellent!
20 Jun 2008 00:15
Real pub, real people, real beer and real carpet. What more can you ask for?
18 Jun 2008 14:35
Atmosphere ok but not exceptional.
Beer good. Wine so so,
Service adequate.
Not quite sure why I like this pub - they are not outstanding at anything but a good all rounder.
This is a nice pub with an eclectic (eccentric?) collection of bric a brac which is good to look at.

One reason I didn't like it on my last couple of visits was the big group of middle aged idiots in the corner (apparently used to drink in Adelaide and Dowager) I found very smarmy and obnoxious.
Presumably barred from the other pubs for being boring- it has improved the ambience of the former pubs to the detriment of this one.

Reviews by BITE users:

This is a pretty small pub with outside seating to the front and rear. It wasn’t that busy inside, but I still had trouble finding a seat and ended up sitting next to the only diners. The food looks very mediocre, but I’ve never been one to go to a pub to eat so I can’t really comment as it may taste fantastic.

Discovery, Pride and Chiswick were available alongside Fosters, Grolsch and Carling. Not the most inspiring range, but this pub does not pretend to be anything other than a proper boozer.

What this pub lacks in size the governor makes up for in hospitality. Cheerful, polite and generally pleasant, it’s a shame all publicans aren’t like him.
21 May 2008 08:36
Characterful pub, but you'll be disappointed if you believe this site's description of it as having a 'riverside location' - it hasn't! It's a small pub down a side-street in the middle of an area of old industrial buildings. The pub is small with wooden walls and floor, with a limited amount of seating outside overlooking the grim buildings and road. Staff and locals seem friendly.

When we were there, on a Sunday evening, there was a four-piece band playing - mostly bland favourites from the seventies - they weren't bad (for free!) but in such a small bar area they were far too loud, making it difficult to talk. We weren't the only ones who moved on after just one pint becasue of this.
15 May 2008 20:28
Now you're talking - this is about as close as you'll get to a piece of Middlesex pub history. Public, saloon and snugs still there, and I not had a better pint of Pride anywhere.
