A unique experience in this pub, and a good one. Bar staff very friendly and informative and 6 real ales in excellent condition. It is a bit pricey, but certainly well worth the visit.

Certainly the best pub in Topsham by a mile; everything about it is just fine, except perhaps the opening hours, but if you want tradition, I guess you have to have the whole thing including traditional hours.
25 Apr 2008 20:54
Excellent unchanged traditional pub. Great selection of beers and very well kept, at least the ones we tried. Fantastic snug, small room with an open fire at the end of the corridor screened off from the corridor with a woodon screen. Strange experience of pirates heads popping round the corner when getting served in the corridor. Turns out there was a party going on somewhere else in the pub.

We stayed here recently. Just the odd 23 real ales to choose from - superbly kept. Great homemade food, room excellent, a breakfast to keep you going all day, friendly atmosphere. Roger and his family are dedicated to making this pub a home from home - and how well they do it! But above all, the beers make this pub a must for all real ale enthusiasts.
2 Jun 2008 22:32
Charming pub with busy small front room and corridor to dining area. We couldn’t get a table for food but had a choice of 19 ales to go with crisps and nuts. Then were told that some roast beef was spare so tucked into that as well, along with the yorkshire pud and 6 veg. Recommended but book if you want to eat particularly sunday lunch.

Called in last Sunday, bit late so only had time for a couple of pints......wonderful pub, very friendly staff and customers, will be back.

Had a lovely weekend in Yelverton at the beggining of Feb and this is by far the best pub for miles. Great local atmosphere, this pub is full of character, open log fire and I would agree with the last comment and go as far to say that I had possibly the best steak I have ever had here! A MUST to visit if you are ever in the area.
13 Feb 2008 10:42
Made several visits during Dec '07/Jan ‘08, sometimes just for a pint or two and sometimes for a meal as well. A very friendly pub with excellent ales, both local and from afar, all kept in superb condition. Tried a steak one evening and was able to congratulate mine hosts on the best steak I'd eaten anywhere for a long time.

Haven't been for while, but only through lack of opportunity. This is a cracking little country pub, with plenty of genuine atmosphere and friendliness, in an all-too-rare 2-bar interior. The Jail & Dartmoor ales are always well-conditioned, and provide a worthy accompaniment, along with a well-balanced wine list, the range of home-cooked foods, which are equally excellent. A really cosy experience, especially on a cold and wet Autumn/Winter day, and well worth digging out.

Seems to be getting shabbier by the minute. The handpumps in the Loco Bar are now purely for decoration (even if some of them do have pump clips) and all real ale is now pulled from the top bar pumps, so go up to the top bar to see what the full range is and order from there.
It really needs some money spending on it in order to attract the customers back (the bucket's been under the sink in the gents for ages). At one time recently, my wife and I were the only two people in the Loco Bar, at 9pm on a Saturday night - even though there were 9 beers on tap. Shame, really.
30 Jul 2008 20:58
7 ales on when i visited last with yellowhammer, branoc, london pride and best of all port stout being regulars, friendly locals and service, worth a visit
6 Mar 2008 19:55
very accomodating town pub, handy for the Station (of course!) and excellent selection of ales in top condition.
start your Exeter crawl here! and end it here before falling onto the train home!
its a big place, plenty of room inside....

Find it hard to believe freezerrm's comments about his experience. Did he not think to ask where foood orders are taken?. Have visited the 'trout' several times whilst visiting close friends in the area and have never experienced this, nor have other people judging from the reviews. The food has always been good to exellent so please don't let people be put off by this. The pub remains a true gem.
5 Jun 2008 21:47
Wouldn't recommend eating here.
The food was indifferent and expensive. We were directed to our table, were not given a menu and were not advised that food should be ordered at the bar. If we hadn't asked we could still be there , waiting to be served.... In an area that has several good food pubs this one stands out as one to avoid, as there are plenty of others with equally acceptable real ales, better service and better nosh!

One of the most magical pubs I've ever been to. Eccentric is the right word. Brilliant live music, drinking until early hours, dressing-up box (funny hats all round), very child-friendly. We got there late and there was no cash machine in the village - but the barmaid happily suggested we keep drinking and settle up later as we were there all weekend, weren't we?!
17 Jun 2008 19:09
great pub, nice food, great ales....p*ss poor service. especially in summer when busy and not enough bar staff employed.
otherwise bl**dy good place to enjoy all the beers on offer...
do it!
6 Mar 2008 12:57
East Prawle is a place which feels pretty much like the end of the world, especially in a howling gale in late December. Entering the pub is therefore a delightful surprise. Everything about the place is eccentric including, it seems, the staff! I don't think there was a single square foot of surface to be found in the whole place that does not have a trinket, picture, cutting, antiquity, book, plant or other bit of clutter upon it (I'd hate to have to do the dusting). The drinks were excellent - mostly local with the addition of London Pride. Food was good too.
I'll have to go back one evening when there's a gig on; the pub famously has a large hall attached which, as well as local musicians, occasionally plays host to improbably big names...

Expensive but given its location and the view from the large windows that's not surprising. A decent place for a pint or two.
28 May 2008 20:10
good place for an afternoon beer while watching the world go past. never had a bad pint in there, not surprising when you see what percentage of the peoplein there are drinking ale
27 Mar 2008 13:52
very good pub in nice location. very good ales, well kept and served. reasonable pub food.

it's a good walk to here from the Gt Western Hotel & St David's Station, but well worth the effort.

there's not much of pub interest in between mind...!

Stayed a few years bakc - nice place to do so with good breakfast.

Beer is fine. They used to do amazing Nachos of a Saturday evening.

Called in for a pint and some tea. Not possible Barman stated - could only manage 1 cup of tea. So much for customer service. Will not use again - but I am old - obviously not a pub for 'Oldies'

Revisited just before Easter.
Ate there, this time.
Good fresh fish - well cooked, and much enjoyed.
Warning - the 'Large' portion really is Large.
[There is a 'Jumbo' portion, too - but even I wa snot hungry enough and brave enough to go for that.]
The flowers was reorted to be good.
The rst of us had a bottle of a loval white wine - Lyme Bay Winery - and very good it was, too. I'm more of a red man - but this was lightly chilled and excellent.
Still an eight for me.
23 Mar 2008 16:08
Why this awful place has such a good reputation is a mystery. The food was inedible (undercooked meat and something described as 'onion rings' which seemed to be deep-fried onion skins), the service was lousy beyond belief and the whole place was packed full of howling children. I'm usually pretty tolerant and forgiving but this is one place I will not be revisiting.
23 Jan 2008 03:18
Great pub in historic setting. Bit of a pile 'em high place but a great place to stop for a pint and a bite. Monkfish in garlic butter is one of the best fish dishes I've ever head. Simple but executed brilliantly and straight off the boat.

This place is a barony. Research the web to see that its owned and controlled by one estate family. To their credit their grip is so firm it is unspoiled and preserved in a time wrap, but the attitude to making money is to their discredit. This pub is a gem architecturally. The snug and bar date from another era. But on a Thursday evening we found that much of the bar menu was "sold out". The beer prices were OK, but take a look at the wine list and the half board rate. Amazingly expensive! We stayed at a BB on the quay and the owner couldn't be bothered to make us a sandwich to take as a packed lunch - we were walking the coastal path. He told us to get one at the post office - which of course did not sell sandwiches. It's worth visiting Clovelly to see an unspoiled place, but don't stay or eat there.
20 Apr 2008 22:43
Visited the pub last year and can´t wait until my next time in Clovelly. Will book into the Hotel and see what the village is like when the day visitors have left. Old fashioned bar, with decent beer (according to my Husband) Shandy was nice as well.
Had a pleasent meal in the small bar.
14 Apr 2008 16:17
Visited in October 07. Fantastic setting. Nice pint and good lunch time food. The snug is wonderful with the locals mixing well with the countless visitors.

See Mr Crow visited on new years eve. What a surprise that he found the service slow and food not the top of the range. Perhaps this day is a local holiday in those parts.

Popped in 4 first time in ages last week. Still a great looking building, reasonably fast service and a lovely well kept pint of O Hanlons Dry Stout was enjoyed, 8/10
5 Jun 2008 11:56
Took nearly 15 minutes to get served drinks when only a couple of people stood at the bar, but when we ordered food later the service was extemely quick. Great building with the original stained glass windows and a pulpit dominating one end.
28 May 2008 19:59
Great pub. What a Weatherspoons should be.
Beer selection was good, but service can be a little slow. The food is excellent, when I have eaten at lunch time. But havn´t tried the evening yet.
Just enjoy a decent pint looking at the great building.

I would avoid this pub, unless you can afford to throw money away. I was charged £3.15 for a bitter shandy! It is also a very scruffy establishment.
12 Jun 2008 19:14
Great location to watch the riverside action if the sun is out. Beers OK and staff friendly.
6 Jun 2008 19:52
Brilliant setting if the weather's nice and you can sit outside by the river, facinating when the tides coming in.
Food was good and beer ok if you stick to those served by pump rather than gravity.

Cheap booze & food; can get ridiculously busy, especially summer weekends; somewhat spoilt a couple of years ago when it became a Lloyds bar with the inclusion of video screens, music and a dance area from later evening onwards; still excellent value if you can cope with all of that.
20 Jan 2008 16:41
Very clean Wetherspoon pub - very good manager not afraid to set and carry out high standards (gets stuck in !), excellent pint of Guinness. Worth a visit.
11 Dec 2007 18:31
Not too bad if you arrive early or avoid weekends as gets very busy. Good choice of ales & wine. As usual damn good value. Food we had was very hot & plentiful with quick service.

Visited last week-end and will not bother again. Nice looking pub but with poor service and that speaks volumes.
16 Jun 2008 17:46
When Youngs took over, the pub took a sad nose dive. The beer selection was lost and then the live music on Friday nights was ended. So it quickly lived up to its nick name as The Grave.

Off the kids drinking circuit, so needs something to attract passing trade.
They decided on food. But have to say it is a lottery as to what you get. Visited on Nov. 5th last year. Two meals were good, two sent back. One for being undercooked and the other for being stale. Last weeks lasagne maybe.

Think the problem is staff. The manager seems O.K. but sometimes wonder about the catering staffs grasp of English. Had to repeat the order about three times before they understood. Beer has got better recently and the Quiz nights are well worth visiting for.

So to sum up. Good in parts. Bring back the live music. Hire a few decent workers that remember to clear the tables, and get in a few decent guest beers. All is not lost yet.
7 Apr 2008 00:18
Good atmosphere, great beer and friendly bar staff.

Avoid for their roast sunday lunch, you will find better in a motorway service station.
The potatoes are more deep fried than roasted - inevitably uncooked in the middle whereas the other vegetables are overcooked and soggy. The beef is rubbery and fatty, almost inedible. Thankfully though the portions are best described as minimalist.

If you are looking for food stick to a sandwich or perhaps a steak, anything not too difficult to get wrong, perhaps it's better to eat there when you are not hungry.

Shame really from Youngs, normally noted for their high standards which makes it all the more surprising.

Reviews by BITE users:

We booked a table for 9 with a view and we got a table with a view but rather a poor one at the end of the restaurant and the best tables with a view vacant. The service was very slow although they were very helpful and pleasant. We arrived at 1.00 and didnt finish until 3.15 even though it was not crowded. Food was mediocre - beer battered haddock was soaked in oil with slimey batter, good chips, salad instead of mushy peas (yuk) wasnt even a garnish quantity. Burger was overdone and not eaten. Two baby scallops as a starter - not impressed. Cheese was £6.50 for three little portions of unidentified origin - one was dried up mousetrap - all from fridge so tasteless.
Very good wines but no desert wines.
Shame as very welcoming and not expensive but just really rather poor.
19 Apr 2008 21:56
I think I can call myself a local... having seen Coombe Cellars change hands at least 5 times.... it's present incarnation looks good on the outside with those magnificent views visible from a very elegant bar, but here is where the praise has to end. My wife and I visited on a Friday evening and found the 'new exciting' menu very ordinary, and the service poor; the fault was with the training not the staff, who were valiant in their attempts to please.
The dishes, when they finally arrived, were quite awful, and a sending back did not improve matters at all, there was tasteless miniature portions of duck on soggy salad, cold plates under hot food and the clotted cream was a lie. The drinks were served apallingly late and the bill was just too much.
We look forward to either a restructuring or a change of ownership again.... it's such a beautiful place.
12 Apr 2008 10:13
I stumbled on this site whilst searching for something else and have been amazed by the reviews I've read, so much in fact that I've registered just to say how much I enjoyed my visit there this evening. The minute my husband and I walked in we were impressed with the stylish decor and atmosphere. We were immediately welcomed, shown to a lovely table overlooking the river and quickly served. The food was obviously freshly cooked and there was no problem with portion size or temperature. I can't understand why we need every "pub" to have "nugget 'n chips" and a soft play area before we think it's any good. Isn't there room for different styles? It is very different from before, not an obvious "fun house for Kids"(and before you think I haven't got kids, you're wrong), but would it hurt the kids to eat real food for a change!
We really had a pleasant evening and my husband is hoping to take his office there over the Christmas period.
Go on, give it a try - it was well worth it!
