great pub, no noise, dogs are allowed in, and best of all no children spoiling the atmos (sorry parents, but there simply HAS to be somewhere for us to go where children do not act/think they have the god-given right to be there and run riot). Fantastic quality Ringwood Ales, beautifully kept. A regular on our RealAle quest, we cycle from Corfe Castle, and it's well worth it, please give it a go!

Fantastic pub, staff always friendly and remember your drink. Lovely atmosphere and you always get a good pint!

A very good real ale pub with a regular change of guest beer. Well kept and usually a full pint, though certain bar staff have to be constantly reminded.
Chairs are put on tables straight after last orders. A very abrupt manager who can't wait to get you out dead on time and is probably in the wrong job. He would make an ideal traffic warden! My rating is for the Pub, not the current management.

Good pub, excellent choice and quality of ales on offer. Have only visited morning/afternoon times though. Nice that children have to keep to the 'family area', and away from the bar. Well worth a visit, tucked away from the main hustle and bustle. We in the Real Ale Cycling Club (both of us) were pleasantly surprised to find bike racks just a little way down the road..!

Have visited this pub many time over many years. The Real Ale choice (12 at the time) is outstanding which is the biggest influence for my rating. Expected a mixed bag of patrons. Food was reasonably good certainly better than average. If you want choice of Real Ale this is the place to go.

Best real ale pub in Bournemouth, with about 10 available--the stronginthearm is particularly yummy. Food is a tad dearer and much better than the average--try the huge fish and chips.

Great drinks choices: good cocktails & coffees upstairs, local real ales downstairs (although a bit stale from sitting in the barrels). Excellent place to pile into after a gig at the O2 down the road. Really chilled friendly & laid back. Variety of live music, all free I think: Reggae, dub, acoustic, folk, blues, rock, open mike. All day festivals held sometimes in the garden and street for local charities with bands and activities, face painting for the kids good fun, but no children in the evenings. Smoking area amongst the plants, balconies and fish in the garden. Nice place, nice people, good atmosphere.

This pub is truly a diamond in the rough. Situated in the heart of Boscombe, which is not known for much more than a failed artificial reef and crack heads... this pub shines.

A hang-out for all walks of life especially the local musicians who attend their excellent open mics, showcase nights and heaving weekend shows.

There really is something for everyone. Including comedy and games nights.

The staff have always been friendly and welcoming to me.

In a nut shell...Chaplin's/Cellar Bar is somewhere you should visit if you want some good music, food, drinks and fun.

The upstairs is a continental-style bar (with a food operation recently adr ded) with some decent beers running to Leffe and Duvel, a rarity in the area.
The downstairs is a deliberately scruffy music bar with some
sort of entertainment almost every night. Two or three ales are on stillage and usually decent quality. There has been some hoo-hah about the cllientelle from other reviewers: I would say they are just the type you would expect to find in somewhere that serves up loud music (eg the Prince Albert, Brighton). If you are a music fan you will know the type, if not it might be a culture shock. There's worse Bos-scum staggering about outside anyway.

Exactly the same as every other Wetherspoons/Lloyds in the whole country. There are already far too many in the Bournemouth area, why do we need more? Sadly this generic bland place has replaced one of my favourite places to go. Bring back The Gander! It had life and character and dirty music, or at least The Metropole with it's live music, arts exhibitions and jamming sessions. What a waste of a great location. In a few years every street will be filled with nothing but Wetherspoons and Tescos and everything and everyone will look the same. Sad times.

Bring back the Gander on the Green please! This once great establishment has been ruined firstly by "Karma" then by the "Metropole".
The "Christopher Creeke" has driven the nail in the coffin!

Nice friendly spoons pub on 2 floors. With a good selection of real ales.Good quick service. For those on a budget pints are 15p- 25p cheaper than The Moon in The Square.
As it is a Lloyds No. 1 bar music does tend to get quite loud at times.
Can get busy at weekends with students from the nearby college.

Interesting reviews, as this place isn't too bad. Yep, Boscombe and Southbourne have some true scum, but there's no real evidence that there are more in here than anywhere else. At least this place is individual, plays its own music, isn't a chain slave, serves ESTRELLA and has great bar staff!! This place is good and is on the high street and right by the sea- come on! Those who are saying avoid are obviously frightened of their own shadows. This gets a cracking 6 from me- and that is really really unusual. We need more of these places in britain.

"You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy."

An absolute cesspit that self-respecting Southbourne locals avoid. Imagine the really bad pubs in Boscombe, but transplanted into Southbourne. That's it. Having the Grove Tavern around makes sleepy Southbourne far more dangerous and criminogenic.

The Grove Tavern is frequented by old lags, wannabe gangsters, Methadone users, foulmouthed ber-drunks, and the occasional misguided foreign tourists. If you value your safety at all, stay away.

This place has undergone a marked improvement since my last visit. The Ringwood 49er - which was 'only' 2.80 a pint compared with 3.05 for a pint of Ringwood Best in The Royalty - and Wells Bombardier were well kept. The staff were friendly and hard working and most of the more menacing people who used to drink in here seem to have moved on.

Reviews by BITE users:

i have passed your comment on to the manager and they have said that all there lines get flushed at least 2 galloons of water after each line clean and that it would not be possibly for the beer to taste of line clean .............so changing the pint would have indeed been a benefit even if it was from the same line the glass would have been diiferent !!!!!!
18 Dec 2010 21:03
Changed it for what precisely? Ringwood Best is the only real ale in this pub so any replacement would have tasted exactly the same. Yes, I acknowledge that even the best of pubs serve up a duff pint from time to time but when it's as a result of the lines not being properly flushed you have to wonder at the quality of the staff or staff training.

I have just looked at the review about the ringwoods at greens and I would have to say that I have now been drinking in Boscombe for 24 years and have never had such a nice pint of ringwood best as I have had in that pub.
If there had been somthing wrong with your drink then you should really have told the bar staff, they are all really friendly I'm sure they would of changed it.
