user reviews of the Jolly Maltster, Fulham

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Dropped in early Saturday evening to meet up with some mates. A pleasant, fairly typical west London pub. Floor boards, dark wood and faux leather, the usual selection of real ales (2 from st austell brewery, black sheep and pride), wines and trendy lagers.

The bar staff were efficient and friendly and the black sheep was very good.

The only downside is that the beer garden could do with a bit of a scrub.

The last eight reviews and this one are from people who love this pub! I have worked there for nearly a year and it has honestly been my most favourite place! It is run by a truly gorgeous woman who makes it her life's work to ensure that this pub caters for everyone! Come in on your birthday and literally get treated like royalty, come in for an after work pint and you are quickly considered one of the family. Regulars and bar staff have become genuinely good friends of mine and as bigdavec quite rightly says...we do love your face...unless that is, you come in on new year and at 2 minutes to midnight decide to be the ONLY person in the pub to have an issue with the bar staff taking a measly 10 mins to celebrate new years and then get aggressive and borderline violent with us when we ask you to please stop yelling! In conclusion, get your face to this pub and have a right jolly knees up!

Ive been going to this pub for a few years now and have never felt more comfortable while getting drunk.

- The beer is very good
- The staff are happy and sexy
- The booze is very well priced
- The management know what it takes to run a pub
- Great atmosphere

Hence i would happily live there if my missus would allow it.

Better known as The Malt house this vibrant, lively pub caters to all your needs; whether you are 21 or 81, whether you desire real ale or a new age cocktail, a comfy chair or a drink that gives you crazy hair this establishment will not fail.

On a serious note this pub has that very rarest and most special of things, that certain je ne sais quoi* or X-Factor** if you will that lets you feel at home as soon as you walk through the door. The bars staff become your friends and before you know it you are part of this wonderful extended family.

The general ambiance of the pub is warm and friendly. Dont believe me try it.

* This literally means I dont know what, which I think we can all agree sounds much better in French.
** Simon Cowell, please dont sue me!

Really good pub with excellent staff and a good selection of beers and wine . The food is also quite good too . I have been there numerous times and this new year will be remembered for many a year as I had a thoroughly enjoyable evening and wouldn't have wanted it any other way . I can definitelly recommend a visit there as it is a really great pub which is run very well by the manageress Cate .

Great pub, warm and welcoming, great staff. I have eaten here many times, the food is fantastic, especially the pies. I love this place and you can go in there alone as a woman for a coffee and not feel intimidated or out of place, it is that welcoming and is down to the atmosphere created by the Landlady Cate and her husband Caleb.

After I visited this pub I had an itch I could not scratch. It was quite an extraordinary experience. I can say with hand on heart that this is one of the best pubs I have been into in a long long time. The staff are so cheerful, so much so, they seem to be there for the pleasure of it rather then to work for a living. The manager is a breath of fresh air and in the middle of a very busy evening will still have time to smile and be attentive. There is a connection between manager to staff to clients that surpasses anything I have seen before its almost physical. I have never been driven to write a comment on any pub in 25 years but I just wanted to scream and shout this one. The food is very very good (I had a meat pie and potatoes mash WOW) If you have never been there then you need to sort your life out and go as soon as possible. If you have been and you did not feel what I felt then contact your local GP, I think you can get therapy on the national health. When we find something good lets take the next step and nurture it and tell our friends and show support, well done to the staff and Cate the manager.

Brilliant pub, excellent staff and friendly atmosphere and locals. I was there for New Years Eve and had a fantastic evening. Can't understand the negative comments which are total rubbish in my view.
karabiner - 2 Jan 2011 20:26
I love this Pub! The atmosphere is fab and the staff are both friendly and welcoming. The drinks are expensive but no more than you would pay anywhere else in and around London! The food is amazing and I would recommend the pies, yuuuuummmy! I don't have a bad word to say about this place and really don't understand some of the negativity i've read on here. My fave pub by far :D
Hamish85 - 2 Jan 2011 18:59
Angry female staff and locals. Good ales though.
Strange NYE policy of shutting the bar when everyone wants a drink - this ruined my NYE when I questioned the Manageress about it!
RealAleRealAleRealAle - 1 Jan 2011 14:31
Ridiculously expensive pub. Bar staff are efficient and friendly but this does not detract from the prices.
eddyd - 24 Aug 2010 11:02
good pub but too expensive

Well, it's certainly changed quite a bit since the makeover - very civilised. Some may think this is no improvement, but I quite like it. Decent beer in a pleasant atmosphere, well worth a visit.

Well, a massive change since it's been done up. Much more civilised - some may not think this a good thing. Personally, I quite like it. Good beer in pleasant ambience. Well worth a visit.

The Malt House is revitalised following the refurb. Well Done!
Bea is doing a great job and she's hot too. Well worth a visit.

I must say the Maltsters is now a great improvement on the dive it used to be. I usually like keeping pubs the way they were but the old Maltsters was full of drunken/druggy no-hopers and often Chelsea fans which created an intimidating atmoshpere. Its been refurbed well with carpeted areas and music at a very sensible level and proper banquette seats instead of datf sofas - it really is a good update on a traditional pub - well done to all concerned. Enjoyed a pleasant couple of pints on a saturday night - London pride was fine and nice big bowl of assorted nuts. Only downside perhaps was the food on the menu was absurdly priced (10 for sausage and mash I think), but all in all a very welcome change. Good to know there is a good watering hole in teh centre of Fulham

Hello to anonymous 7 aug 2007. This is Bea from the Malt House. I just thought you should know manager Chris no longer works here... :)

In the future if you intend to publicly name and critisise someone, you might grow the back bone to put your own name to it? Just a thought.

hi to anyone who remembers me i used to work at the maltster (scott) i have been back since and it has changed way to much it used to be a place where every one could meet up a proper locals pub i work up in charlton now.
sab79 - 9 Oct 2007 16:06
Went in here before the Chelsea v Birmingham game. For football atmosphere, the old Maltster magic has gone. On the plus side they still show live sport, still have wooden tables and the Black Sheep Ale went down a treat.
ChrisBass - 22 Aug 2007 11:53
looks nice after refurb , like the manager chriss but can not stand bea she is very rude
anonymous - 7 Aug 2007 17:49
so it sounds like another pub in fulham bites the dust and this one must have made the old bill happy. ill take a look next season but cant see any more days at the footy in there, only a couple more proper pubs for them to ruin now :(
chrissyboy - 18 Jul 2007 17:59
Looks quite nice inside, typical new age 'pub'. Strictley over 21s which could give them a headache on football days but not a bad place. 3.40 for a pint of heineken though which is very expensive, even for Fulham.

Chamged its name to Malsters something as well.
ChelseaYouthFirm - 5 Jul 2007 23:11
Now re-opened but as some sort of wine bar and with the pool table and tvs taken olut. Sad if true but i will be having a look at it tonight and reportiung back.
ChelseaYouthFirm - 29 Jun 2007 16:18
Currently closed and covered in Scaffolding. According to a note outside the Chimney stack is in danger of collapsing!
carstenp - 15 May 2007 17:06
Great food and value for money. Decor could do with a bit of work but been serving beer on the site since the 17th century so nice to know yuppies haven't got hold of their bulldozers yet. Certainly the best pub in Fulham to support England for the world cup with all the screens. Known as a Chelsea supporters place to be with a great atmosphere on home match days but opposition supporters should steer clear. I saw Ronan Keating and Jamie Cullum were there on Tuesday. Love the decorations.
anonymous - 25 May 2006 20:03
Crap hole.Full of leery loutish drunks and footie fans. Even the most hardened drinkers avoid this place as it attracts the kind of 2 pints and I rule the world & if you disagree Ill kick yer face in type of drinker. A prime candidate for the bulldozers.
mariusmaxtible - 20 May 2006 11:28
been coming here before and after chelsea games for years, very unfair reputation, cheap beer, sound staff members, and unless your stuck-up,great boozer, and at least it aint turned into poncey bar like all other boozers round area!!!
chrissyboy - 26 Mar 2006 16:18
Used to be full of Chelsea nutters on match day years ago, dont go if you have a northern accent
anonymous - 22 Mar 2006 13:11
just a note to anonymous-9 july 05 you didnt speak to the regulars then they are lovely yes there is some trouble sometimes but no more so than anywhere else may be your mum kept you wrapped up in cotton wool for to long GREAT PUB GREAT GUV.
anonymous - 12 Mar 2006 14:12
We use it when we go up to London for football. Good prices for the area (and the "Big City in general), bar staff considerably better than most of the other bars around, decor & toilets leave a bit to be desired, in fact it's tatty at best. A London bar for the frugal.
SW6 - 15 Dec 2005 08:35
Worked here about 5 years ago in the days of Sean, Aidan, Brendan, Luke and Ruth. Any of the Regulars still about?? Andy
Andy - 13 Oct 2003 09:17
Don't go there if you're an away fan on a Chelsea home match day!
