Just being reopened, very nice interior and homely feel. Quite a unique selection of beers and larger's on tap, a nice change from the usual. Thoroughly recommend!

No longer somewhere I seek out for it's food, and their cider is the downmarket stuff. Still, it's better than when we visited in Dec last year though.

Well, last week we were heading down to the coast but came across some atrocious wet weather and so decided to about turn and head back to Sheffield Park which we normally approach through Fletching and one of our favourite pubs, The Rose and Crown.
Admittedly, it was just after midday but the moment I entered the pub and saw the rather bare interior with the tables not laid or anything remotely inviting, we had a brief look at the menus and then left. Perhaps we were a trifle hasty but I can't imagine that this pub was now attracting its original clientele that it had been, last year and for which we always made sure that we had booked a table.
The place just looked shabby and wanting but maybe I am being unfair and perhaps an hour later would see this place crowded. However, the menu, whilst adequate for us did not seem to offer what used to attract people in the past.

It's safe to go back folks! Had a very good game terrine starter then a tasty fish pie, and the steak and ale pie was a proper double crust one and HUGE.

Had a tasty sausage, onion gravy and veg here the other evening. Very good. Nice pint of Harveys (40 pence a pint cheaper than the nearby Griffin Inn!)
Characterful pub with old beams.
Friendly landlord.

Fantastic news - the pub is now under new ownership. Haven't been here for ages, but what a change about to what I had been hearing. The place was clean, fresh and the dining room has been reinstated to very good standard. The barmaid Grace and owner Adrian were welcoming and polite and it was great to hear all the plans for special events, live music and themed food nights.
The beer was great - Timmy Taylors Landlord and Harveys Best, and the food was superb. I was told that the Chef, Aaron i believe, has a wealth of experience. The menu covered good pub fare, was reasonably priced and what my partner and I had was delicious. Well worth a visit !!

Oh dear. The menu was limited, food was poor and expensive. 10.50 for small fish chips & peas. Haven't eaten khaki coloured peas since I gave up school dinners.

The last time I visited this pub a few years ago, it was run down and pretty grim so I thought enough time had passed to give it another try.

A board outside told of new management, I don't know how many new managers there have been in the last couple of years. We went in for a drink to be greeted by a an extemely wired Scotsman who while polite and keen to please, rather over did it and actually ended up making us feel rather uncomfortable.

The Harvey's was adequate at best and apparently the wine was poor.

We didn't stay for food as all the tables were apparently reserved. They weren't actually reserved at all just a ridiculous ploy to make it look like the place was so popular it was fully booked. All it does is put people off.

Sorry, won't be rushing back again.

Return visit today to this nice old pub where we have had several excellent meals. Other Half enjoyed lamb with asparagus & dauphinoise potatoes, my otherwise tasty chicken balti could have done without beetroot in the side salad. If I could make a wish it would be to have a good quality cider available.

Great food big helpings and delicious grub and a great atmosphere. Excellent ales on draught. A very nice pub, well looked after by Adrian, the friendly and highly experienced landlord.

Back for a visit today. Specials on were great. Now has a woderful collection of local art on display. Can be viewed around the pub and restaurant and are available for sale. There was a super one of Fletching Church available.

Now an excellent pub. Dare I say even better than it has ever been. Super food if only the amount of food on the plates seems a bit excessive for my appetite!
Have one minor criticism in that I asked for a cup of filter coffee and got a large cup of what appeared to be like a Latte. I had expected a cup of black coffee with some cream to add. Maybe this was why the cup was 2.25!!!
Anyway a super pub and excellent food and only wished I lived nearer.

Oh , and forgot !! Superb Harveys and London Pride on hand pump !!

Phone up the pub again today 27th Sept and surprisingly got an answer. Apparently the pub is now under yet a new owner and is now open again!!
HHGTTG - 27 Aug 2010 11:02
Oh, dear! Was looking at their website today for a possible visit tomorrow, before going on to Sheffield park and the pub appears to be closed again "due to unforeseen circumstances". What's happened here?
HHGTTG - 3 Aug 2010 11:30
Very friendly and good food well priced.
just a good village pub.
edandcorinne - 19 Jul 2010 21:41
As promised, we were back and every bit as impressed as last time, packed with people eating and enjoying themselves, very nice atmosphere in a genuine village local, good on you girls.
nelly0164 - 22 Feb 2010 13:29
Polite, attentive and hard working landlords/staff. All very pleasant and cosy with decent food at sensible prices (far cry from the Griffin next door which is ripoffsville). We'll be back
nelly0164 - 12 Feb 2010 11:14
Now completely renovated and Brilliant. The girls are attentive and fun.
Real ales: Always Harveys with a couple of extras thrown in, such as Adnams or Old Speck..
If you've not been since the previous incumbent passed away, then do call in. Jane and Di will make you most welcome. Open all day, food lunchtimes and evenings. Dog friendly. All this genuine write up and I'm only a customer!! (O.k., a regular one).

A warm welcoming village pub with excellent food and beer. There's a good fire in a huge fireplace in the cosily furnished main bar and a separate restaurant area too. Beer is Harveys and Jennings Cumberland Ale was the guest on my visit - very good. The extensive blackboard menu looked excellent. This is a super alternative to the ridiculously expensive Griffin down the road. Recommended.

A great choice of food and the staff are so friendly and attentive. I give it 10 out of 10 for customer service.

Went to this pub yesterday for the first time since reopening and it was nice to see the new cheerful staff and owners on duty. I also heard the sad news about Roger's death, which, apparently is why the pub eventually shut down.
The once grotty upholstery in the pub bar was apparently restored whilst Roger was still alive and it is nice to see the bar area so fresh again and the new pub menus so enticing.
We'll now be going back frequently to have a pub snack before going on to the nearby Sheffield Park.
HHGTTG - 10 Feb 2008 12:15
After a year of closure, now reopened (Nov 07) by friendly ladies. Food good and good value. Well kept Harveys and guest ales such as Tanglefoot, 6X, Old Spotted Hen etc..
terrybaldwin - 26 Jan 2008 13:30
It appears that this pub is now open again for business (new management/ownership) after having been shut for some time, due to bereavement.
I look forward to visiting this friendly pub again next time I visit nearby Sheffield Park.
HHGTTG - 10 Jan 2008 15:20
a far less pretentious pub than the griffin good beer and friendly air.
