Stayed here recently for a few nights. Tea/coffee facilities and tv in room, HOWEVER,
mattres on beds were comletely worn out and useless, curtains had not been washed for years, were filthy and all torn. Thick black mould in the shower, no excuse for this as it would wash of if somebody had bothered.
Whole place very tired and in need of TLC. No food available at all so had to go out for breakfast.
One one evening in the bar there was an elderly lady drinking pints of lager and shouting at everybody that came in the door.
Would I stay here again, NO!

Barn of a pub made even more bare because everyone was drinking outside on one of those rare warm evenings. Beer was OK but a bit warm, nothing special.

Large Holts boozer, decent cask ales but no food seemed to be served, which was a surprise for a pub that size.

I recently had a birthday party in The Spead Eagle, and i had previously discussed all aspects of the night with the landlady. The prices were very reasonable and the room is a great size. I found on the night the room had been decorated for me and the buffet food was all waiting to be uncovered. I found the D.j that had been suggested by the landlady to be very experienced and catered for all ages at the party. The food was fresh and light just as i had asked. The bar staff were very chatty and polite and I was always served with a smile. At the end of the night I stayed in a double room, which i had booked the day I booked the party. The room was of a high standard, the sheets were clean and the bed was made. The bathroom was clean and smelt fresh. I have no complaints about the night and i am very happy that i decided to go with this venue as the pub has been highly recommended before by a few friends. I suggest if you are looking to book an event that you choose this venue, what more could you ask for, reasonable prices, lovely staff, clean accomadation and everything you ask for plus more!!!

staff over booked room for my wedding room so would of had to stay in landlady's living quarters disguising
leighton2010 - 16 Aug 2010 21:48
there wasnt even any bubbly on table which u would expect for a wedding... the dj music was very quiet the tables was also poorly set out... i dont even know how that landlady has a pub which is licensed for private room. she even double booked the hotel but yet has still charged for it
stace10 - 16 Aug 2010 21:45
visied a wedding which the after do was being held at this pub. i found the room wasnt as expected. the manager was very interfering and caused atmosphere. also food was late and it want wat it was made out to be. the guests wasnt aloud to get their own meals it was dished out to them. then there wasnt enough. the buffet was late and also wasnt enough and bar staff an the dj the managers son his friend an gf was helping themselves. the dj was rubbish didnt know what to do. i would NOT recommend this pub to anybody while under that landlady. also the arrangements was sorted but at the end of night manager took it upon herself to try and get more money by sayin she wanted extra and by charging people double for drinks saying they hadnt paid them........ very poor organisation effort and approach

the liquid stuff was good the pub was rubbish and the function room was bare and not exciting at all under crap managment
leighton2010 - 16 Aug 2010 21:40
The liquid stuff?????? I think someones wedding day is much more important than liquid stuff!! I am sure the pub made a good earning behind the bar that day never mind the amount of money charged for the services. This is a rating site for the whole establishment NOT just the liquid stuff...................YAWN !

I recently attended a party at this pub, not knowing where to go we walked through the main pub, and saw a bunch of old men and one girl at the bar who seemed to be the only one working even though there was a function? Took ages just to get a coke! Went on down to the function and was shocked, it did not look like a wedding function at all...............I felt a lttle sorry for the bride and her groom.........when I found out how much was paid I was shocked again! Sorry this is not a function room suitable for a wedding or other special event at all, I know of much cheaper places in the same vicinty that charge much less for the hire of their room and food. Definately a no no. Just my honest opinion.
Private59 - 16 Aug 2010 21:31
Once again a post that tells us zilch about the liquid stuff on offer, just more ranting about nothing in particular.

YAWN!!

leighton2010 - 16 Aug 2010 21:15
the new landlady is foul mouthed she ruined my wedding day i would not recommend the function room to anyone she intrudes in the party and she charges way to much i paid 600 and nothing to show for it there wasn't enough food for my quests. she promises you loads the room was bare and rubbish for what i paid the dj which is her son was rubbish and not even a dj, she wanted praise from my quests and she slammed fire door in my 2 year old's face, she is intimidating and loud. do not go to this pub you will be ripped off and threatened i was.
leighton2010 - 16 Aug 2010 21:12
Brilliant pup. Great Holt's beer, hand pulled, not that "smooth" rubbish. Has a new landlady. Give it a try. You will be pleased you did

Wonderful old style British boozer becoming increasingly popular with the disillusioned trendy bar types. Magnificent pint of Holts.

Awful place, really. Went in on CAMRA business recently. Was glared at by half a dozen pairs of eyes. Although I have to say friendly staff and nice half of mild.
doncaosdelanada - 28 Feb 2009 14:19

This pub is a joke right? What is it, 90p a pint or something, my mate took me in here once, CHRIST!, I thought I'd walked into a hospital ward specialising in mental health, geriatrics, and A&E all at the same time (and not doing a good job of any). I do recommend you go in here so you can look into the chasm of pub-hell. Do not go in here a second time, you won't get the smell out of your clothes.
Fredwood - 29 Aug 2006 17:09
No no no no no, even as far as joey holts pubs go you have got to give this bad boy a miss. You can get a good pint of joeys but it aint here. best thing to do with this place is walk by real quick like
scootini83 - 9 May 2006 21:24
Quite the old mans pub this one. Generally quiet, not very interesting. Used to go when it was slightly interesting but these days i'd rather just go eleswhere. Cheap beer is the only advantage to this otherwise dull forgetful boozer.
CloudyPint - 2 Nov 2005 09:50
This pub has cleaned up and redecorated inside. The cost of beer increased slightly (10p)
The local brew is one of the finest in the area. Holds it's own against a pint of Taylors.

Only ever been in this pub twice and both times it was full of old men who smelt of wee. Good beer though.

The Spread Eagle is a quality Holts' pub. Very clean and friendly bar staff. The value for money is second to none, as with all Holts' places.
Pete K - 19 May 2004 18:17
A Joseph Holt pub, which means one thing - seriously cheap beer! Their own premium lager (called Diamond, I think) is just 1.61 a pint! Seemed to be mainly full of locals, and there's a bar with a large-screen for football, etc. Not the greatest place on earth, but when it's that cheap it's certainly worth a visit! Also does reasonable accommodation - but no breakfast!
