user reviews of the Cricketers Arms, Leamington Spa

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The 'Bowling Green' is leamington spa's oldest town hall. The are records of this pub trading in 1625. This makes its history very important. Not only in local history but also in UK history. It is in need of a refurb so still has its 70's decor. This does mean that it's got a lot of charm. If you are in the area please pop in. The Bowling Green, New Street Leamington Spa. Warwickshire.

Thisplace was a normal but good back street local which you can tell is an important part of the local community. Also very near victoria park.

I always found it to be a good boozer, it never claimed to be anything it wasn't. On the whole proper people, proper beer and proper food, all adding up to a proper pub and a proper good time. Used it for twenty years with no complaints. It was a major highlight when the so called "regulars" fucked off 'cos they couldn't get their disco played on the stereo though, (fly by nights claiming sovereignty to a pub the neither knew nor understood). Wonder where they are now? Probably thinking up bitchy comments to type on websites so they can vent their anger!! Keep you're clothes on disco queens and enjoy your dining room/back garden. It doesn't matter who owns the building, the pub itself is the one who doesn't like you!!!!!

Talk about fall from grace. Talk about black sheep. Talk about a blot on the landscape.

Great setting, just off the river, not far from the parade, a park at the end of the road and a bowling pavilion opposite. This Georgian splendour should be complemented by a cracking pub. Oh well. Carling shandy please.

At last it's over. Pub SOLD - new owners coming in soon. Perhaps it can get back to being a decent pub again, not a navvies cespit. Mind, it could take a couple of months just to clean and get the pipes sorted. Huzzah I say!!!!

Sorry jmorgs(??) Clearly you're wrong,

Made the mistake of coming down to Leamington and spending a Friday evening in this place (AT A FRIENDS REQUEST!!)

The place smelt of P*** and the roof leaked into my friend's pint. NOT GOOD!!

I live in Yorkshire and have seen more atmosphere in Leeds mortuary!!!!!

It hasn't got any better!!

I have been frequenting this pub for the last 3 years and have been made to feel welcome everytime I have propped up the bar. Run by a family they always make the extra effort to make conversation as they know the importance of returning customers. We recently hired the pub for our son's Christening and the food they put on was fantastic, the care they put into making sure the do went smoothly really showed how well the pub is run. Not only a decent pub, but one that has a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

I don't know where the negative reviewers went but it certainly wasn't this pub, or maybe they are a little put out that it changed hands and are doing there best to sour peoples opinions of the new owners.

Well done Fras, Sue and Nobby

SAee you for the next Christening!!!!!! (not for a little while hopefully!)

Did I stumble into a parallel Cricketers? The welcome was warm, the pub was clean and tidy and the beer (Butcombe Blond, a long way from home) was excellent.

Considering we went in here on a Saturday night and there were only about 10 people in there sums it up really. A poor pub that doesn't really have any redeeming features.

What a difference a change in landlord makes. Used to be a great local pub, off the beaten track from the main 'theme' pub trial. The welcome has vanished along with the food, all day opening, and 80% of the customers!!! With a bit of effort this could be a gem again but there seems a distinct lack of interest from those concerned. Sadly one of the few real homely pubs has turned into another back street boozer. I wouldn't even say it was as good as a working mens club!!!!

Such a shame. This used to be one of the best little haunts in the area and I believe even won an award for being the 'Best pub in the Midlands'. Sadly this is no longer the case, over the last year the quality food and beer and warm welcome have all vanished along with many of the customers!!
The Cricketers now resembles something not disimilar to a working-mens club, it's dirty and is really smokey with no music - the TV is always on (even if there's no sport on??!!)
I have to agree with Dell on this one, the interest in the pub has gone; not only from the regulars but also it would appear from the management!!!!

Mixture of what jo30 and dell have said. No longer open in the afternoon, and no food as before (great shame for both). Seem to concentrate on 'low maintenance' beer rather than the wide selection of real ale as previous, but what they serve is ok. Went recently on Friday evening with only about 10 people in there, but landlord and manager seemed freindly enough. Not exactly fun (maybe if you're in with the locals), but pleasant enough.

This pub is actually owned by mother and son. Fantastic, friendly atmosphere and great food. You're made to feel like a regular even if you are not (i'm not). Visit and decide for yourself. I only feel sorry for the next pub that "dell" decides to drink in next he/she is obviously not very big on fun.

UPDATE - the pub is now under new management and is officially dead. It is owned by father and son, father not that interested in it (too much golf to play) and the son only wants his friends as customers, leaving everyone else to wait. I give them until Dec 05/Feb 06 before they go under. No customers = no cash. Shame, used to be a great boozer for the past 15 years.

This is a really solid pub with Bombardier, Abbot, Taylor's Landlord and - if I recall - London Pride or similar. All in good condition (tho' perhaps by chance the Taylor's Landlord hasn't been entirely bright on a few occasions) and the staff are very happy to swap beer and are very friendly. The food is straight-forward but good value. Some sport but mainly a conversation pub.
