Very pleasant traditional-looking pub in historic location. 3 real ales, any of which I would have enjoyed, in good condition. Excellent service - bringing the beers to our table because there'd been a slight delay. Food menu looked good too, though not tried - maybe next time!

One of the best pubs experienced on my stay in Salisbury. Many other pubs here have a focus on tour groups & food, naturally enough in a tourism hotspot, but this one is happily normal, and only a stone's throw from the Cathedral. Food available (I think) but I was there for beer, an XPA Golden Ale (3.50) which was quite good. Friendly bar bloke, not many customers so service was prompt. Top pub.

Not great, ale was off, place looked tired and it was quiet given a friday night. Plenty better pubs in salisbury.

I always drop in here when I'm in Salisbury. Reasonably well kept ales, mixed types and ages of clientele, decent atmosphere, good staff. It's a good pub but maybe not a super pub. A tad pricey maybe. There's reasonable pub grub at lunch time.

Visited yesterday and I'm afraid I can only describe the place as RANK! Used to use it on crawls a while ago as it had a half decent selection of Ales and usually no fools in the vicinity, but the selection was uninspiring with 6X, Courage Best,Deuchars IPA & OSH on offer. Had to hand back the IPA which was exchanged for an OK OSH but my 6X was left cloudy and half unfinished as I chose to leave with my GF. I RARELY leave a pint if ever! Very poor.

I like this pub - beer is always decent, the clientele is mixed. It's a good place to hide in when you want to escape from the wife.

nice pint of deuchars ipa but bit pricey, 7/10

I've drank here for years, they won't book my band, too heavy punk, lots of indie, lots of indie posuers, but this pub always worms it's way back into my heart, it's over priced and over rated, but not many pubs in salisbury i'd rather drink in! it's the alternative pub in salisbury, by default, welcomes pretty much everyone, just don't piss off paddy and the local skinhead! i'll always drink in this pub when i'm in the bury!

Good pub, visited at lunchtime but it was a bit quiet (see photo) but didn't fancy eating. Ales were good and well kept. Would certainly visit again.

Ales are nice, but no atmosphere. Nearly a fight at the back of the pub when I went in. Over a t-shirt! I ask you. Won't be going there again.

Dreadful place, everyone is miserable as hell, the jukebox is cack and the drinks are extortionate.
Apart from that, it's ace!

Roomy bareboards pub, mostly young student clientele. Very friendly lively place. Quiz on a Monday night which was great fun, run by a really cool dude! We went there quite a bit whilst holidaying in Salisbury. Although we are not student age (unless you count us as mature students!) this did not put us off. Like this pub.

Having read tottonfemales comment I expected to be looking for this place down an alleyway but no, despite the map not showing this section of road named as Crane St, its right there at the corner with High St. Quite a large bar area with plain floorboards & some wooden open booth seating opposite & opening out a little at either end. Large plasma on far end of bar and drop-down screen to right were showing early football Sat, handpumps offered 6X, OSH, Theakston Black Bull, and Abbot was available on stillage behind bar. We were wobbling back past at 23:50 and just managed a final pint before the midnight cut-off.

A fine pub we enjoyed several times during a visit to Salisbury in Feb. 2007 The food was fair, nothing special but good nevertheless. Good selection of real ales during our visit.

We usually visit this pub during the day or early evening which may excuse the lack of atmosphere. We always have to ask for a head on our lager though, which is inexcusable. It has a good jukebox and good decor although the staff are a bit hit and miss.

Salisbury is my home town (i now live in Southampton) and whenever i visit home i always pop into the old ale house. Unless you know Salisbury quite well you will probably not find it as it is tucked away but the atmosphere is fantastic and the olde worlde style is really cosy. Not been in on an evening as yet but the food is brilliant. Good range of beers and ales.

Four well kept real ales and the barman knew what he was about. Was very quiet (this was a Saturday lunchtime) but having read the other posts am I correct in assuming that this is the sort of place that becomes livlier during the evening?

buffoonery... ha ha! i forgot i'd written that... top word! the Ale House is loosing some of it's old Rock types to the Mill at the moment... but still one of my fav pubs in Salisbury!

Best pub in Salisbury, IHMO. Very friendly staff, good beer, good jukebox.

The Old Ale House is a great student style pub. Prices are OK and the quiz night which we went to on a Monday night is so amazing. You have to go to this! The decor is traditional and the overall feel is relaxed.

Fun pub. Friendly atmosphere. We stopped in for a pint after dinner while on holiday from the States and stayed for 2 hours.

the old ale house is great!! and who is this (alexandra person) get your facts rite castironshores arent in there all the time . infact they have a management deal in London and are working very hard. Also there wasnt even a secene in there before the shores started gigging in there. they are the best thing thats happend to it. Will worked in there for 5 years building up the music/bands and fab jukebox. Are you jealous or something ALEXANDRA. GET YOUR FACTS RITE OR GET LOST!!!
billy - 29 Jul 2004 17:04
I think Alexandra's got it wrong, Cast Iron Shores are not to be found here most nights, in fact they hardly use the pub socially as they are too busy touring!
Nigel - 22 Jul 2004 15:18
Probably the best pub in Salisbury for music and atmosphere but some of the clientele are often quite proud of themselves. Cast Iron Shores really not that good and tend to sit there most nights thinking they are celebs and looking down their noses at everyone who isn't wearing a deliberately roughed up old leather jacket and spent at least 3 days doing their big hair. They think they're The Strokes - they're not - get your own image guys. Bar staff really nice and incredibly friendly - lots of other bands play here too and majority are great providing a really great atmosphere for the most part - quite a "studenty" pub, but in a good way. Gets very busy on a weekend and takes ages to get served - but not because the bar staff aren't doing their best.
Alexandra - 22 Jul 2004 13:45
Usually, well kept ales, but rather expensive. Ringwood Old Thumper 2.55 a pint! Still, quality atmosphere and Cast Iron Shores should be signed!
Barfly - 21 Jun 2004 12:33
a not bad pub, can be hit and miss, no doorstaff means beligerent drunken buffoonery can spoil things a little, especialy when you want to relax in the (beer garden) car park.
Skin - 16 Jun 2004 11:14
Best atmosphere in Salisbury. Friendly staff, gr8 music. Quiz night well run. Good customers. Top notch pub.
jay - 7 May 2004 19:54
A great pub featuring great music too. Cast Iron Shores and Mister Kite are two local bands that headline here. Pedigree, 6X, Ringwood Best, plus guests.
